Brief news summary

Officials in Los Angeles are investigating allegations of students at Fairfax High School using artificial intelligence to create and share inappropriate photos of their classmates. This follows similar incidents in other schools. The school district is taking these allegations seriously and may impose disciplinary actions. The images were reportedly shared using a third-party messaging app. The Los Angeles Unified School District is committed to providing digital citizenship lessons to educate students about ethical use of technology, including AI, privacy, and safety. It is uncertain if law enforcement is involved or if any disciplinary actions have been taken. Concerns are also raised about the potential legal consequences of using deepfake technology to create or share AI-generated explicit content without consent. School districts, such as the Orange County Department of Education, are actively addressing the challenges presented by AI in the education system.

Los Angeles school authorities are currently looking into allegations of inappropriate photos being circulated within the Fairfax High School community, indicating another instance of possible misuse of technology by students, according to a district statement. Just last week, administrators at Laguna Beach High School initiated an investigation after a student allegedly used artificial intelligence to create and circulate "inappropriate images" of fellow students. In January, five eighth-grade students from Beverly Hills were expelled for their involvement in producing and sharing fake nude pictures of classmates. These students utilized artificial intelligence to overlay classmates' faces onto generated nude bodies. The pictures, which were disseminated through messaging apps, targeted a total of 16 eighth-grade students. The involvement of AI in the Fairfax High incident remains unclear as the Los Angeles Unified School District did not provide this information in its statement. The district expressed a serious approach towards the allegations, stating that they do not align with the values of the Los Angeles Unified community, and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken if warranted. Based on initial findings, it appears that the images were created and shared using a third-party messaging app unaffiliated with Los Angeles Unified, according to the district's statement. The district highlighted its efforts to provide "digital citizenship" lessons to students across all grade levels. They emphasized their commitment to enhancing education on ethical technology use, including AI, as well as promoting digital citizenship, privacy, and safety within school communities. Similar incidents have involved the participation of local police departments. However, the Los Angeles Unified School District did not disclose whether the Los Angeles or school police have been involved in their investigation or if any disciplinary actions have been taken. Deepfake technology allows for the merging of real individuals' photos with computer-generated nude bodies.

These fabricated images can be produced using a mobile phone. In a recent report by KABC-TV, a 16-year-old high school student from Calabasas shared that a former friend used AI to generate and circulate pornographic images of her. In January, AI-generated sexually explicit images of Taylor Swift were disseminated on social media. Experts argue that if a California student shares a nude photo of a classmate without consent, they could potentially face prosecution under state laws dealing with child pornography and disorderly conduct. However, these laws might not apply to AI-generated deepfakes. Numerous federal bills have been proposed, including one that would criminalize the production and sharing of AI-generated sexually explicit content without the consent of the individuals depicted. Another bill aims to grant victims the right to sue. In California, lawmakers have put forward proposals to extend prohibitions on revenge porn and child pornography to include computer-generated images. School districts are actively working to understand and manage this technology. The Orange County Department of Education has started leading monthly meetings with districts to discuss AI and its integration into the education system.
