Two graduates from Louisiana State University of Shreveport (LSUS) have developed an innovative chatbot for medical coding. The chatbot, powered by artificial intelligence, aims to enhance efficiency and accuracy in medical coding. Phillip Kilgore and Keyvan Shahrdar have created an ICD code reference that assists medical professionals in navigating the extensive list of approximately 9, 000 International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes. Traditionally, medical professionals undergo extensive training to memorize these codes. However, with this chatbot, healthcare professionals can describe symptoms, and the bot will generate a list of relevant ICD codes related to the description. Kilgore emphasized the goal of providing a reliable software tool that enables medical professionals to quickly access accurate ICD codes, thus allowing more time for patient care. The code list can be accessed digitally on the Discord server or downloaded into an Excel spreadsheet. Shahrdar stated that this Discord server, featuring a chatbot that returns ICD codes, is the first of its kind.

The medical coding chatbot is built upon the ChatBotCPA framework, a sophisticated conversational process automation (CPA) platform. This platform enables the chatbot to interpret medical terminologies and context, ensuring the provision of the most relevant ICD codes. Kilgore, the chief technology officer for Shahrdar Enterprises, has firsthand experience with the complexity of medical coding. He has worked on projects involving extensive databases of cancer diagnoses, which necessitated the use of ICD codes to pinpoint specific forms of cancer. The accurate navigation of ICD codes can have a significant impact on medical research, insurance underwriting, and, most importantly, patient care. Kilgore highlighted the research benefits of accurately recording the nature of diseases and comorbidities, as it improves the accuracy of coding and recording.
