Mark Cuban on AI Job Impact: AI Will Create Jobs, Not Eliminate Them

Brief news summary

Mark Cuban responded to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s claim that AI could eliminate 50% of entry-level office jobs by stating that AI will create jobs rather than destroy them. Cuban highlighted that past technological shifts also displaced certain roles, like secretaries and office dictation staff, but new companies and jobs emerged as a result. Amodei warned that unemployment could rise by 10% to 20% over the next one to five years and urged governments and AI firms to stop minimizing AI’s impact on sectors like finance, law, and consulting. Cuban, however, has consistently downplayed the negative impact of AI on employment, emphasizing that the effect depends on how companies implement AI. He also argued that AI cannot fully replace creative professionals, describing it as a creative tool rather than a decision-maker. Cuban cited failed attempts at using analytics to dictate creative outputs as evidence that AI won’t replace human roles entirely. Neither Cuban nor Anthropic commented further on the matter.

Mark Cuban asserts that AI will generate jobs rather than eliminate them. He made these comments in reaction to an interview with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, published Wednesday by Axios. In the interview, Amodei claimed that AI could potentially eliminate 50% of all entry-level office positions. "Someone needs to remind the CEO that there were once over 2 million secretaries. There were also dedicated employees handling in-office dictation. They were the first to face displacement in white-collar roles, " Cuban wrote in a Bluesky post on Wednesday. He added, "New companies and jobs will emerge from AI, boosting TOTAL employment. " Amodei told Axios that he anticipates unemployment could rise by 10% to 20% within the next one to five years.

He emphasized that both the government and AI firms should cease "sugar-coating" the impact AI will have on entry-level roles in fields such as finance, law, and consulting. "Most people are unaware that this is about to happen, " Amodei said. "It sounds unbelievable, and people just don’t believe it. " This is not the first instance where Cuban has downplayed the severity of AI’s impact on white-collar jobs. In December, Cuban told Business Insider’s Lloyd Lee that the degree to which AI affects a company's workforce depends on "how well the company can implement AI. " "Every company is different, " he explained. During a March episode of the "YMH" podcast, Cuban expressed doubt that AI could fully replace artists. "AI isn’t going to, you know, access your bank account and produce a movie or a podcast for you, " he said. In a follow-up interview with Business Insider regarding the podcast, Cuban described AI as "just one more creative tool" and noted it cannot serve as a "decision-maker. " "I've seen companies use analytics to decide what a studio or label should release, and they fail repeatedly. That’s the same as using AI to replace everyone. It might be a novelty, but it won’t succeed, " he said. Neither Cuban nor Anthropic responded to Business Insider’s requests for comment.
