A Maryland high school teacher, Dazhon Darien, has been arrested for allegedly using artificial intelligence to produce a fake audio recording with racist and antisemitic content using the voice of his principal, Eric Eiswert. The audio was sent to Darien and two other teachers but was later found to be generated using AI technology. Darien has been charged with disrupting school activities, theft, retaliation against a witness, stalking, and other counts. The incident occurred amidst work performance challenges between Darien and Eiswert, with the principal investigating potential mishandling of school funds.
The recording, which spread widely on social media, caused significant disruptions for the school staff and students. Eiswert has been on paid administrative leave since the incident and the school will be run by district appointees until the end of the school year. The school district intends to terminate Darien's employment.
