Meta announced on Monday that it will start enforcing stricter measures against Facebook accounts that repeatedly share unoriginal content, including reused text, images, and videos. This is part of a broader effort to protect content integrity and support original creators on the platform. The company revealed in a blog post on its website that it has already removed about 10 million accounts this year for impersonating prominent content creators and taken action against an additional 500, 000 profiles involved in spam tactics or generating fake engagement. These measures include reducing the visibility of posts and comments and suspending access to Facebook’s monetization programs. This update follows similar policy changes by YouTube, which recently clarified its stance on mass-produced, repetitive videos, especially those created using generative AI.
Meta emphasized that users who transform existing content through commentary, reactions, or trends will not be affected. Instead, enforcement will target accounts that simply repost material—either through spam networks or by impersonating the original creators. Accounts found repeatedly violating these standards will face penalties such as being barred from monetizing content and having their posts' distribution reduced within Facebook’s algorithmic feeds. Meta is also testing a new feature that inserts links in duplicate videos, directing viewers to the original source to ensure proper attribution for creators. This change comes as social platforms face increasing saturation of low-quality, AI-generated media. Although Meta did not explicitly mention “AI slop” (a term for bland or poorly produced AI content), its policies appear to indirectly address this issue. The announcement arrives amid growing frustration among creators regarding Facebook’s automated enforcement systems. According to TechCrunch, nearly 30, 000 users signed a petition calling for improved human oversight and clearer appeals processes, citing widespread wrongful account suspensions. These new enforcement policies will be gradually implemented over the coming months, allowing creators time to adjust. Facebook’s Professional Dashboard now offers post-level insights to help users understand how their content is evaluated and whether it risks demotion or monetization restrictions. In its latest Transparency Report, Meta stated that 3% of Facebook’s monthly active users globally are fake accounts, and the company acted on 1 billion such profiles during the first quarter of 2025. As Meta continues to refine its approach, it is increasingly relying on community-based fact-checking in the US, using a model similar to X’s Community Notes, rather than depending solely on internal moderation teams.
