Microsoft 365 Copilot, an AI assistant developed by Microsoft and integrated into its office apps, will be available to everyone starting from 1 November after successful trials. This tool can summarize Teams meetings for individuals who choose not to attend, with Microsoft aiming to relieve the "drudgery" of such tasks. However, concerns have been raised about the potential replacement of workers by technology, as well as the risk of businesses becoming overly reliant on AI-powered assistance. Additionally, there are worries that the current version of Copilot may not comply with new AI regulations that require transparency about whether human or AI interaction is taking place. Collette Stallbaumer, head of Microsoft 365, asserts that it is the responsibility of users to clarify their engagement with Copilot. Nevertheless, according to the EU, it is the responsibility of developers to ensure responsible usage of AI tools. Microsoft's Copilot utilizes the same underlying technology as ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, in which Microsoft has invested billions of dollars.
During a demo, it was observed that Copilot efficiently summarized a long chain of emails related to a fictional product launch and provided suggestions for a response. Users can edit the generated content before sending it or select the AI-generated copy as is. Similarly, Copilot generated a PowerPoint presentation in seconds based on the contents of a Word document, including suggested narration. It was also able to identify themes and offer summaries of discussions during Microsoft Teams meetings. Critics express concerns about potential job disruptions and excessive dependence on such tools, highlighting issues like technological failures, hacking risks, glitches, and policy changes. These concerns prompt questions about the implications of overreliance on the system. Microsoft plans to charge $30 per month for Copilot, which requires an internet connection and does not work offline.
