A recent survey by General Assembly, a technology education provider, found that 62% of 1, 180 employed U. S. adults and 393 U. K. executives fear AI could replace their jobs in the next decade. Younger generations are particularly anxious, while only 6% of directors and VPs see AI as a threat to their positions. Junior employees feel vulnerable because they have little influence and are often the first affected by layoffs linked to AI advancements. From last May to February, over 4, 600 U. S.
job cuts were attributed to AI, though this figure may be underestimated, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Gen Z's worry is rooted in their early career stage, where many roles involve tasks easily automated by AI, notes Lupe Colangelo of General Assembly. In contrast, seasoned execs rely on experience and understanding that AI can't yet mimic. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang echoed this sentiment, stating that AI won't replace executive roles but can perform a portion of tasks. He emphasized that AI users might outcompete others if they optimize work processes. Colangelo points out that while Gen Z offers valuable perspectives, they often lack soft skills like communication and time management. As AI automates more tasks, these skills grow increasingly vital. Millennials are more concerned about AI's impact than Gen X or baby boomers, with around 50% worried about job replacement. Despite boomers' lesser concern, Colangelo urges them to help prepare the next workforce generation, stressing the importance of training and talent development to foster skills sought in today's job market.
