Bitzero Expands Low-Carbon, High-Efficiency Data Centers Across Norway, Finland, and USA

Brief news summary

Bitzero has created a profitable and environmentally friendly mining model by combining asset ownership, low-cost renewable energy, and optimized hardware. Their Norway 1 facility in Namsskogan runs 40MW with 14,000 rigs, expanding to 110MW, alongside a 5MW leased site in nearby Røyrvik (Norway 2). In Finland, Bitzero operates a 10MW data center in Kokemäki, with potential scaling to 800MW. In the US, they manage a 2.5MW data center at a former missile base in North Dakota, with rapid deployment capacity up to 30MW and potential up to 300MW, although this site uses mixed energy including natural gas. CEO Mohammed Bakhashwain highlights their mission to provide high-performance computing while minimizing environmental impact at energy-efficient locations. Investor Kevin O’Leary commends Bitzero for setting new standards in clean, secure, scalable data infrastructure for blockchain and AI, supporting related projects like an off-grid power and data center in Alberta, Canada.

By “combining asset ownership, low-cost renewable energy, and strategic optimization of mining hardware, ” the company claims to have “developed a model that is more profitable per unit of revenue than traditional miners, even under post-halving conditions. ” The exact age of the data centers is uncertain. The company’s Norway 1 facility, located in Namsskogan, Norway, seems to be operational, offering 40MW capacity spread across 14, 000 cryptomining rigs. Bitzero states that this is currently being expanded to 110MW. Additionally, it has leased a 5MW site nearby in Røyrvik, referred to as Norway 2. In Finland, Bitzero operates a facility in Kokemäki, which currently provides 10MW and has a potential capacity reaching 800MW. In North Dakota, USA, the company acquired a former missile base—the Stanley R.

Mickelsen Safeguard Complex at Nekoma, commonly known as “The Pyramid, ” in 2022—and now operates a 2. 5MW data center on the property, with 30MW of capacity “prepped for rapid deployment. ” This 184-acre site could ultimately support up to 300MW, with Bitzero seeing it as ideal “for hyperscale compute and sensitive data storage. ” While the company’s European sites appear to align with its low-carbon energy principles, Bitzero acknowledges that the North Dakota location is powered by an energy mix that includes natural gas, a fossil fuel with pollution concerns, though it has a lower carbon footprint compared to coal or oil. “The world doesn’t just need more data centers, it needs better ones, ” said Bitzero CEO Mohammed Bakhashwain. “Our mission is straightforward: deliver high-performance computing power with the lowest possible environmental impact, and we’re doing this at sites we’ve strategically identified and acquired as some of the most energy-efficient environments on Earth. ” O’Leary, known as Mr. Wonderful from his appearances on the US TV show Shark Tank, has been involved with Bitzero for several years and commented: “I invested in Bitzero because they’re setting a new standard for data center operation in the blockchain and AI era. “They’re building the kind of data infrastructure we need more of: clean, secure, and designed for serious scale. ” Last year, O’Leary announced his support for an off-grid power and data center project in Alberta, Canada.
