Careers in AI are trending, but the market is competitive for those with the necessary skills. Google AI specialist Yann AïtBachir emphasizes the importance of having a strong foundation in technical skills. He also advises starting with smaller companies before aiming for positions in Big Tech. This narrative is based on a conversation with Yann AïtBachir, an AI specialist at Google in Singapore. It has been edited for length and clarity, and Business Insider has verified his identity and employment. I began working as an AI specialist at Google about two months ago, where I assist companies in developing AI strategies using Google's products. Twenty years ago, AI jobs were mostly in military groups, while I spent my early career primarily in startups and small businesses, focusing on data analysis, engineering, and science. The AI surge over the past few years has significantly increased the number of AI-focused jobs and opportunities. Many companies are now investing in AI and transforming their operations with its help. For those looking to build a career in AI, here’s my advice: Develop strong technical skills Although I studied AI two decades ago, the basics remain unchanged. Today’s systems have the same foundational maps, statistics, probability, and computer science principles as in the past. Possessing strong fundamentals in math, statistics, and computer science is crucial since all algorithms, even the latest ones, are built on these core concepts.
A robust foundation allows you to adapt quickly to new developments and stay relevant in the rapidly evolving field. While technical skills are vital, they aren't enough as you advance in your career. Success requires the ability to collaborate effectively with others. Avoid jumping directly into Big Tech If you wish to build a successful AI career, specializing in a specific area is key, as AI encompasses fields like generative AI, predictive AI, and natural language processing. Many roles are available, including engineering, research, product management, and consumer-related positions. Early in your career, explore different roles and find what truly excites and interests you. I advise against jumping into Big Tech early in your career, as a career is a long journey, more like a marathon than a sprint. You might not yet know what you enjoy most and could evolve over time. Smaller companies offer better opportunities for growth and exploration, exposing you to a wide range of work. Later, if specialization in a particular area interests you, Big Tech can help you delve deeper into specific aspects.
