Netflix is receiving criticism from Hollywood actors and writers who are currently on strike. This comes after the company posted a job listing for a Machine Learning product manager role with a potential salary of up to $900, 000. The film industry is still debating the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in moviemaking, and organizations such as the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) have expressed concerns about a lack of compensation and protections related to AI. Actor Rob Delaney, known for his role in an episode of "Black Mirror" that explored AI's use in replicating actors' performances, criticized the high salary of the Netflix position, stating that it could have been allocated to support multiple actors and their families' health insurance. Hollywood writer Elizabeth Benjamin, known for her work on shows like "13 Reasons Why" and "Bones, " also expressed her disapproval of Netflix's AI role, emphasizing the importance of preserving humanity. Other Hollywood writers shared similar disappointments over the job listing, highlighting inadequate payment for actors and potential ethical concerns regarding AI usage. The writers on strike are demanding assurances that AI will not be utilized in writing or rewriting without their consent. The WGA seeks concessions similar to those achieved by the Directors Guild of America (DGA), including requirements for studios to consult with guild representatives before implementing AI in the creative process and holding regular meetings to discuss AI's influence on the industry.

The existing WGA Agreement defines a writer as a "person" rather than a "corporate or impersonal purveyor" of literary material, thereby excluding AI-generated content from receiving writing credits. The AMPTP, representing producers, has agreed to establish provisions for the informed consent and fair compensation of performers when their digital replicas are created or their voice, likeness, or performance is substantially altered using AI. However, they have not responded to the WGA's latest counter regarding AI. Legal expert Daniel Gutenplan emphasizes AI's potential impact on various aspects of filmmaking, from writing and editing to visual design and post-production. He also mentions the danger AI poses to talent in the industry. The new Netflix role for a Machine Learning product manager entails defining strategic vision, ensuring product success, developing user education programs, and understanding users' needs in collaboration with AI practitioners and application engineers. The desired qualifications include extensive experience with Machine Learning platforms, technical understanding, and leadership skills.
