Brief news summary

A new artificial intelligence tool developed in the UK has the potential to quickly rule out heart attacks in patients attending the Accident & Emergency (A&E) department, helping to avoid unnecessary hospital stays. The tool, called Rapid-RO, successfully ruled out heart attacks in over a third of patients across four UK hospitals during trials. By quickly identifying low-risk patients who can be discharged safely, Rapid-RO could redirect valuable healthcare resources to where they are needed most. The tool combines data from the initial troponin blood test with other patient information to determine the risk of a heart attack. It was found to be more accurate than troponin tests alone, and also effective across different demographic groups and regardless of whether patients had Covid-19. The researchers hope to develop Rapid-RO into an app for use by doctors. The study findings were presented at the British Cardiovascular Society Conference.

Creators in the UK have developed an efficient artificial intelligence tool called Rapid-RO that can quickly rule out heart attacks in patients who visit A&E. The tool has been successful in ruling out heart attacks in more than a third of patients across four UK hospitals during trials. The British Heart Foundation (BHF), which funded the study, states that this technology could potentially help tens of thousands of people avoid unnecessary hospital stays, allowing healthcare resources to be redirected where they are most needed. Rapid-RO combines data from troponin blood tests and other patient information to identify individuals in a very low-risk group for heart attacks.

The AI tool was able to successfully rule out heart attacks in 36% of patients, compared to 27% with only troponin blood testing. Additionally, it was more accurate in identifying heart attack cases, missing only 27 cases compared to 108 missed by troponin tests. The researchers are now planning to develop Rapid-RO into an app for doctors to use. The study findings were presented at the British Cardiovascular Society Conference.
