ALBANY, N. Y. -- New York state agencies are now required to review and report their use of artificial intelligence software due to a new law signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul. The Democratic governor signed the bill last week following its earlier passage by state lawmakers. Under this law, state agencies must assess any software employing algorithms, computational models, or AI techniques.
These reviews must be submitted to the governor and top legislative leaders and also made available online. The law prohibits using AI in specific scenarios, such as making automated decisions about unemployment benefits or child care assistance, unless those systems are continually monitored by a human. Additionally, state employees are protected from having their work hours or responsibilities reduced because of AI. State Sen. Kristen Gonzalez, a Democrat who sponsored the bill, emphasized that the law is a critical step in establishing guidelines for using this emerging technology in state government.
