News Corp Australia is producing 3, 000 AI-generated articles per week, primarily focused on providing service information. These articles, generated by the Data Local team using AI technology, cover topics such as weather, fuel prices, and traffic reports for their hyper-local mastheads. Executive chair Michael Miller shared this information at the World News Media Congress in Taipei, highlighting that a team of four staff members use AI to generate thousands of local stories each week. Led by News Corp's data journalism editor Peter Judd, the Data Local unit enhances the copy written by reporters for the company's 75 hyper-local mastheads across the country. The AI-generated articles, overseen by journalists, offer valuable information such as "Where to find the cheapest fuel in Penrith. " While the reports do not disclose their AI-generated nature, News Corp assures that the Data Local team of journalists oversees all information and decisions. Furthermore, News Corp has recently advertised for a data journalist role involving the creation of automated content to drive revenue.

Miller also revealed that 55% of subscriptions are driven by the hyperlocal mastheads, emphasizing the importance of localized news. The company has transitioned many of its print newspapers to digital-only formats, launching new digital-only titles in regions with populations of 15, 000 or more. These titles are staffed by a single journalist, who has the potential to cover their salary if they generate seven new subscriptions weekly. While most newsrooms in Australia are exploring AI applications, other media outlets like the ABC and Nine Entertainment are also analyzing AI's potential to enhance content accessibility, including transcription, text-to-speech delivery, translation, recommendations, and personalization. At this time, Nine Entertainment does not have a specific AI policy to share.
