Nicolas Cage, aged 60, has spoken out against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Hollywood industry. During an interview with The New Yorker published on Monday, Cage expressed his concerns regarding the potential manipulation of his likeness using AI. He mentioned that he had to undergo a scanning process for a show and a movie he was working on. "They have to digitally recreate me, matching my eye color and making changes. I don't know exactly how it works, but they'll basically take my body and do whatever they want with it through AI technology. I really hope AI isn't involved. I'm terrified of it. I've been very outspoken about this, " Cage revealed to The New Yorker. This story is only available to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider to start reading now. Cage further expressed his unease about the direction the creative industry is heading. "It makes me wonder where the integrity of artists will end up.
Will it be replaced or transformed?Where will the soul of it lie?" Cage pondered. What's even more unsettling for him is the fact that studios may retain control over his likeness even after his passing. "Think about it. What will they do with my body and face when I'm no longer alive?I don't want them to do anything with it!" he exclaimed. The renowned actor, known for his role in "National Treasure, " has previously experienced alterations to his likeness for a film. In November 2023, Cage disclosed to Yahoo Entertainment that his cameo as Superman in "The Flash" differed from what he had originally filmed. "To begin with, I was on set to simply appear in an alternate dimension, witnessing the destruction of the universe, " Cage explained. However, the final version of the scene was different. "When I watched the film, it featured me fighting a giant spider, which I did not do. That wasn't what I filmed, " Cage clarified. Cage admitted that he was unaware of what had transpired, although he did not believe it involved AI. Nevertheless, he proceeded to share his sentiments on AI, referring to it as a "nightmare" and "inhumane. " For him, artificial intelligence goes beyond human comprehension. The use of AI in the Hollywood industry has sparked controversy in recent years, becoming a significant point of contention during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, a labor dispute lasting 118 days. Cage is not the only actor who has expressed opposition to AI's involvement in Hollywood. In September 2023, Sean Penn argued that studio executives who wished to create AI replicas of him should be willing to allow him to do the same with their daughters. "So, you want my scans and voice data and all that. Here's what I consider fair: I want your daughter's scans because I want to create a virtual replica of her and have my friends join in a virtual party with her. Can you please look into the camera and say you find that acceptable?" Penn stated in an interview with Variety. The concern over AI replacing jobs extends beyond the acting industry. According to a 2023 report by Goldman Sachs, generative AI could cause significant disruption in the labor market, potentially affecting around 300 million full-time jobs worldwide. The study highlighted that white-collar workers, especially those in legal and administrative roles in the United States, are most likely to be impacted by new AI tools. A spokesperson for Cage did not respond immediately to a request for comment made outside regular business hours.
