Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, attended the Inaugural AI Insight Forum at the Russell Building on Capitol Hill on September 13, 2023. On Wednesday, Nvidia and the Georgia Institute of Technology announced the launch of the first artificial intelligence supercomputer specifically designed for student use. Nvidia's graphics processing units are integral to the development of large language models by OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta, and a growing number of well-funded startups, all competing for a share of the generative AI market. Over the past year, Nvidia's revenue has skyrocketed, surpassing the market caps of Alphabet and Amazon. This initiative aims to democratize access to supercomputing resources, which are typically only available to tech giants and well-connected startups. It emphasizes the importance of preparing the next-generation workforce in AI technology. Initially, only undergraduate students at Georgia Tech will have access to the computing cluster, which runs on Nvidia's enterprise AI software and a "virtual gateway" developed by Penguin Solutions. Thus far, the supercomputer has been used for a single class, "Foundations of Machine Learning, " since the start of the semester. However, Georgia Tech plans to expand usage.

Arijit Raychowdhury, Chair of Georgia Tech's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, revealed in an interview with CNBC that by spring 2025, both undergraduate and graduate students will have access to the supercomputer. This development follows OpenAI's partnership with a higher education institution in January. Arizona State University gained full access to ChatGPT Enterprise in February and plans to utilize it for coursework, tutoring, research, and more. Georgia Tech's supercomputer comprises 20 Nvidia HGX H100 systems, which contain a total of 160 Nvidia H100 GPUs. These GPUs are in high demand throughout the tech industry. To put it into perspective, one of these GPUs can perform a multiplication function that would take 50, 000 students 22 years to complete in just one second, according to Georgia Tech's press release. Students will utilize the supercomputer for various course projects related to computer vision, large language models, robotics, supply chain management, chemical and biomedical engineering, generative AI for creativity and design pursuits, as well as their individual entrepreneurial ventures, as mentioned by Raychowdhury in an interview with CNBC.
