SoftBank and NVIDIA Collaborate on Japan's Most Powerful AI Supercomputer

SoftBank is collaborating with NVIDIA to build Japan's most powerful AI supercomputer using the NVIDIA Blackwell platform, which will support various sovereign AI initiatives. This partnership aims to position Japan as a leader in AI technology and open billions in revenue opportunities for telecommunications globally. SoftBank has initiated the world's first AI-powered 5G network, using NVIDIA's AI Aerial platform, transforming telecom networks into AI revenue-generating assets.

Additionally, SoftBank plans to create an AI marketplace with NVIDIA AI Enterprise to meet Japan's local and secure AI computing needs. NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang highlighted Japan's history of technological leadership, praising SoftBank's investment in AI and 5G as stepping stones to global leadership across telecommunications, transportation, robotics, and healthcare. In parallel, SoftBank is set to be the first recipient of NVIDIA's DGX B200 systems to construct a DGX SuperPOD supercomputer for AI development throughout Japan. SoftBank's AI-RAN technology integrates AI and 5G networks, allowing telecom operators to monetize additional network capacity. A successful outdoor trial in Kanagawa prefecture demonstrated that AI inference workloads could run alongside 5G functions using excess network capacity, projecting significant potential revenue for telecom operators. SoftBank also plans to use NVIDIA Aerial RAN systems, aiming for a 40% reduction in power usage compared to traditional infrastructure. Finally, a forward-looking statement included in the announcement notes potential risks and uncertainties with these advancements, alongside acknowledgments of various trademarks and rights related to NVIDIA products. This collaboration continues to push Japan toward AI innovation while paving new business opportunities within telecommunications.

Brief news summary

SoftBank and NVIDIA are joining forces to elevate Japan's AI capabilities by constructing its most advanced AI supercomputer on the NVIDIA Blackwell platform. Announced during the NVIDIA AI Summit Japan, this initiative underscores Japan's ambition to achieve AI independence and establish itself as a technology leader globally. Integral to this strategy is SoftBank's plan to integrate AI with 5G networks worldwide through NVIDIA's AI Aerial platform, thereby unlocking new revenue streams for telecom providers. The partnership seeks to create a Japanese AI marketplace powered by NVIDIA AI Enterprise software to meet the growing demand for secure AI computing. This move positions Japan as a leading force in various sectors, including telecommunications, transportation, robotics, and healthcare. Initially, SoftBank will utilize NVIDIA DGX™ B200 systems to develop an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD™ supercomputer to enhance AI research and support applications like large language models and generative AI. Additionally, SoftBank has initiated an AI-radio access network (AI-RAN) that merges AI with 5G, improving telecom profitability. Trials in Kanagawa indicated that leveraging idle network capacity for AI tasks might increase telecom revenues, potentially transforming AI-driven solutions such as autonomous vehicles and robotics. This collaboration represents a pivotal moment in AI industrialization, with NVIDIA's vast AI resources and SoftBank's 'AITRAS' poised to reshape global communication and business landscapes.
