SK Hynix, the group's chipmaking unit, is expected to control over 50% of the global HBM market this year.
It is the main supplier of HBM chips for Nvidia, who employs them to enhance the efficiency of their graphics processing units for AI computing and training. Nonetheless, Samsung Electronics and Micron are also competing to obtain a substantial market share in the HBM segment, providing potential competition for SK Hynix. Analysts suggest that despite this competition, SK Hynix remains at the forefront of chip-stacking technology, a method that combines multiple traditional DRAM chips to improve speed and enable large-scale data processing. Details regarding SK Group's plans to achieve its target of 80 trillion won have yet to be disclosed. Why is it important: In April, SK Hynix reported its first profitable quarter in five years, with the turnaround attributed to the surge in demand for AI chips.
