Nvidia's Blackwell Chips Power India's AI Infrastructure Boost

During Nvidia’s AI summit in Mumbai on Thursday, two executives announced that a new significant data center being developed by Ambani's Reliance Industries Ltd. in India will utilize the latest Blackwell chips from Nvidia. The company has also established partnerships with major Indian conglomerates such as Infosys Ltd. and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. India is poised to become a significant player in the AI landscape, leveraging its population of 1. 4 billion to implement technology across various sectors including agriculture, education, and manufacturing to enhance efficiency. Although currently a minor revenue source, global tech giants like Nvidia, Microsoft Corp. , and Meta Platforms Inc. are banking on India's fast-growing economy as a potential alternative to China for growth. “India has historically produced and exported software, ” Huang stated. “Looking ahead, India will export AI. ” A 1-gigawatt data center being constructed by Reliance in Gujarat will be among the first to incorporate Nvidia’s Blackwell chips. Nvidia's clients, including Amazon Web Services, are also preparing to adopt these chips, with AWS projecting that they will be operational by next year. Dell Technologies Inc.

has announced that servers powered by Blackwell will be generally available starting early 2025. Nvidia’s products have become highly sought-after by data center operators, who utilize these chips to create AI software and services. The company, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, acknowledged in August that Blackwell production has proven more challenging than expected, and it is making adjustments to enhance its manufacturing yield—which refers to the number of functional chips produced. Additionally, Nvidia plans to assist Tech Mahindra Ltd. in developing a large language model in Hindi while collaborating with Flipkart on its customer-service conversational systems. The company also aims to partner with Indian healthcare firms to improve productivity in both patient care and research. As a leader in the global AI surge, Nvidia supplies the chips that giants like Microsoft and Google rely on for AI development. Huang has been advocating for AI adoption throughout the globe this year, promoting technologies he refers to as part of a “new industrial revolution. ” Nvidia commenced its operations in Bangalore, southern India, two decades ago and has since established development centers in three other cities, employing around 4, 000 engineers—its largest workforce outside the US. Approximately a year ago, Nvidia formed initial agreements with local conglomerates, including Reliance and Tata Group, to construct AI data centers. Ambani announced during a live-streamed shareholders meeting in August that Reliance Industries is developing a suite of AI tools and applications known as JioBrain, mentioning the term 'AI' over 80 times during the event. As US-China tensions rise, India has gained increased significance for global tech companies. Nvidia is among the firms whose operations in China have been limited by US restrictions. Huang referred to “India’s moment” following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US last month. While India has a growing digital economy, its AI infrastructure is still in the early stages of development. The government has allocated $1. 2 billion through the IndiaAI Mission to establish data centers essential for building AI systems and commercializing related technologies.

Brief news summary

At the AI summit in Mumbai, Nvidia revealed a strategic collaboration with Reliance Industries to establish a major data center in Gujarat, using its innovative Blackwell chips. This project, bolstered by partnerships with prominent Indian tech companies such as Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services, positions India—home to 1.4 billion residents—as a key player in the AI domain. Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, anticipates India's shift from being a software exporter to becoming a leading force in AI, particularly in agriculture, education, and manufacturing. The new 1-gigawatt data center will be one of the first to implement Blackwell chips, attracting clients like Amazon Web Services, despite some manufacturing hurdles. Collaborations with Tech Mahindra are set to develop a Hindi language model, while partnerships with Flipkart will enhance conversational AI. Having invested in India for over 20 years, Nvidia is strengthening connections with Reliance and Tata amidst escalating US-China tensions. Additionally, India's government has committed $1.2 billion to the IndiaAI Mission, highlighting the country's potential for substantial advancements in AI technology.
