The two images exhibit slight variations, but there are striking resemblances in the eyes, nose, and mouth. On the right, you'll find a recent photograph of myself taken in a Brixton studio in south London. Positioned in front of a green backdrop, my shirt displays a slight crease. On the left, however, stands a person who is not truly me. This individual is an peculiar replica sporting a white T-shirt. Their skin appears unnaturally flawless, devoid of any imperfections, complemented by long and lustrous hair. This portrait was generated through artificial intelligence (AI), utilizing only three facial data points and a concise, eight-word prompt: "Woman in her 20s of white British descent. " Both my authentic and AI-created portraits are the creative work of Amit Lennon, a photographer based in London.
As part of his latest project, Artificial Intelligence Portrayal, he has crafted a similar collection of images. It's highly unlikely that most individuals, when viewing my AI portrait alone, would be able to discern its artificial nature. And according to Lennon, that's precisely the intention. The project's motivation lies in peering "behind the curtain" of AI, Lennon explains. Its aim is to prompt people to question the nature of what they observe and the elements that contributed to its creation. He wishes for viewers to focus less on the mechanics behind the artwork's construction and more on their emotional response to the final result.
