Reportedly, OpenAI and Microsoft are collaborating on a colossal $100 billion data center project. The project, detailed in a Friday (March 29) report by The Information, will comprise an AI supercomputer named "Stargate" set to launch in 2028. Sources involved in discussions believe that Microsoft will fund the venture, which is anticipated to surpass the cost of any existing data centers. Stargate will be the first in a series of supercomputers planned by the two tech giants. The report indicates that the successful development of Stargate hinges on OpenAI's upcoming major upgrade, scheduled for release in early 2023. PYMNTS has reached out to both companies for comments but has yet to receive a response. In a recent analysis by PYMNTS, the competition for generative AI supremacy was explored following the release of ChatGPT by OpenAI.
One potential contender for the top spot, according to John Licato, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering at the University of South Florida, is Google. Licato attributes this to Google's "institutional expertise, " computing power, and access to data. He highlights Google's Gemini models, particularly Gemini 1. 5 Pro, for allowing longer contexts compared to GPT-4's token limit. Licato also mentions Meta and Anthropic as strong competitors in the field. Access to substantial computing power appears to be a critical factor, as both Google and OpenAI possess significant GPU processors and advanced computing technologies like TPUs (tensor processing units), according to Licato. In another development within the AI space, PYMNTS explored Openstream. ai's recently patented software designed to facilitate business interactions through its enterprise virtual assistant (EVA) platform. The software creates AI avatars, virtual assistants, and voice agents capable of engaging in human-like conversations without the need for complex back-end configurations, scripts, or the risk of hallucinations. Openstream's CEO and founder, Raj Tumuluri, emphasized their unique approach to dialogue management, which combines the understanding of actions, conditions, and entities with reasoning and planning to deliver powerful capabilities.
