OpenAI's Orion Model: Incremental Advancements Ahead

OpenAI's upcoming flagship model, known as Orion, may not signify as significant an advancement as past models, according to a report from The Information. Testers of Orion have noted that while it performs better than OpenAI's current models, the improvement was less pronounced than the shift from GPT-3 to GPT-4. This suggests that the pace of enhancement is decelerating.

In fact, Orion may not consistently surpass earlier models in certain areas, like coding. To address this, OpenAI has established a foundations team to explore ways to enhance its models despite a reduced pool of new training data. Reportedly, these strategies include training Orion on synthetic data created by AI models and refining models further during the post-training phase.

Brief news summary

OpenAI's upcoming model, code-named Orion, may not offer as significant an advancement as previous models like GPT-4 did over GPT-3, according to a report from The Information. Although Orion's overall performance surpasses current models, testers observed a slower rate of improvement. In certain areas, such as coding, Orion may not consistently outperform its predecessors. To address these challenges, OpenAI has established a foundations team to explore ways to enhance its models amid a limited supply of fresh training data. Strategies being considered include using synthetic data generated by AI models for training and focusing on post-training improvements.
