Brief news summary

The principal of Pikesville High School has resigned amid false allegations involving a deep fake audio recording. As a result, there have been changes in school leadership, including Eric Eiswert now serving as principal of Sparrows Point Middle School and Mary Boswell-McComas becoming superintendent of Kent County. April Franklin has taken over as the new principal of Pikesville High, while the school's athletic director, Dazhon Darien, is facing charges for creating a fake recording using Eiswert's voice and for other disruptive activities. This incident has prompted the school district to update its technology system for verifying applicant information, in light of concerns over Darien's fraudulent resume. Investigations into the involvement of two physical education teachers are still ongoing. Eiswert believes the recording was in response to his investigation into Darien's alleged mishandling of school funds. Kyria Joseph and George Roberts served as interim leaders during Eiswert's absence.

The principal of Pikesville High School, who was reportedly framed using an AI-generated audio clip by the school's athletic director, will no longer be leading the high school. Eric Eiswert has been appointed as the new principal of Sparrows Point Middle School, replacing Mary Boswell-McComas, who will now serve as Kent County's superintendent. Eiswert, who left Pikesville High in January following the release of the deep fake racist recording, plans to meet with the school community during the summer. April Franklin, the former principal of Southwest Academy Magnet School in Woodlawn, has been confirmed as the new principal of Pikesville High by BCPS spokesperson Gboyinde Onijala. In an April news conference, Baltimore County Superintendent Myriam Rogers announced that Eiswert would not be returning to Pikesville High after the scandal. Pikesville High's athletic director, Dazhon Darien, aged 32, has been charged with disrupting school activities, theft, retaliating against a witness, and stalking. According to the police, he used artificial intelligence to mimic Eiswert's voice and make racist and antisemitic comments. The recording was widely shared on social media and caused community outrage. The criminal case, which the state's attorney of Baltimore County described as one of the first in the country involving AI, shed light on the school system's hiring practices. In a May news conference, Rogers addressed questions from reporters regarding whether Darien had met the minimum requirements for being an athletic director and if he had provided false information on his resume. As part of the district's hiring process, school officials checked Darien's references, credentials, and consulted an FBI database, Rogers stated.

However, she acknowledged that even with these precautions, misinformation can still be included. The district is currently updating its technology system to better identify applicants using false information. Rogers recommended Darien's termination in April. At present, it is unknown whether he is still employed by the system, as it is considered a personnel matter, according to Onijala. The district will also be investigating two Pikesville physical education teachers who were allegedly involved in the scheme, as stated by Rogers in April. Onijala confirmed that the Office of Human Resources at BCPS is conducting an investigation into their possible involvement. Detectives believe Darien created the fake recording as retaliation for Eiswert's investigation into alleged misuse of school funds and theft. Eiswert also believed that Darien held a grudge over his contract not being renewed and for Eiswert reprimanding him for firing a long-term coach without approval, as he informed the police. According to online court records, Darien does not have a listed attorney. He is scheduled for an initial appearance in Baltimore County Circuit Court on July 8. While Eiswert was absent, Kyria Joseph, executive director for high schools at BCPS, and George Roberts, a consulting administrator, temporarily assumed the leadership of Pikesville High.
