An MIT-connected initiative is revolutionizing our understanding of energy production. Despite the landmark success of a fusion experiment at the National Ignition Facility, which hinted at the potential of this technology, the moment largely faded from public attention. During a recent series of talks, Bob Mumgaard, CEO and Co-founder of Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), highlighted the quest for new clean energy sources and the role of AI in pioneering research. He described fusion as a reaction requiring a machine that could produce it safely and sustainably on Earth, utilizing widely available fuel without generating nuclear waste. CFS is a leader among approximately 50 fusion companies, making strides towards practical fusion processes, though challenges remain. Mumgaard emphasized the need for the reaction to be hot, dense, and insulated. He noted advancements that surpass Moore’s Law, suggesting that successful research could lead to an unprecedented power plant.
CFS is establishing a demonstration facility called SPARC in Devens, Massachusetts, employing high-temperature superconducting magnets, similar to the tokamak fusion method being researched in Russia and Europe. The National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory recently achieved a groundbreaking fusion experiment, generating more power than it consumed for the first time. The facility, which cost $3. 5 billion, struggled for years but indicates potential for commercial fusion. Mumgaard announced plans for CFS’s first grid-scale fusion power plant, to be located outside Richmond, Virginia, in partnership with Dominion Energy Virginia, aimed for completion by the early 2030s. He emphasized the long-term commitment of investors and the urgent need for progress to combat climate change. AI is crucial in this endeavor, with researchers at Princeton University utilizing it to predict plasma instabilities in real time, enhancing reactor stability. This innovative approach could play a pivotal role in mitigating climate change, underscoring AI's potential importance in addressing global challenges.
