San Diego State University Enhances AI Access with OpenAI Partnership

San Diego State University is making significant strides to enhance access to artificial intelligence (AI) tools through a new collaboration with the California State University (CSU) Chancellor’s Office and OpenAI. This partnership grants students, faculty, and staff complimentary access to ChatGPT Edu, a version of the widely-used generative AI tool tailored specifically for higher education. The Edu workspace utilizes advanced GPT-4o technology, which is generally available only to paid ChatGPT subscribers. It features enhanced data security and crucial privacy protections, ensuring that all personal and university data remains confined to SDSU’s Edu workspace and is not used to train ChatGPT’s public large language model (LLM). Proficiency in AI technology is becoming increasingly vital for students’ preparedness for the workforce. OpenAI highlights that California ranks among the top five states for ChatGPT adoption among individuals aged 18 to 24. In a recent AI survey conducted by SDSU, over 80% of students reported using ChatGPT. OpenAI's survey revealed that the primary ways college students utilize AI include initiating papers and projects, summarizing texts, examining topics, and brainstorming creative ideas. Additionally, this tool can enhance employees' daily responsibilities, boosting efficiency, optimizing workflows, and assisting with routine tasks. The introduction of the premium features of ChatGPT Edu at no cost reflects the CSU system's dedication to leveraging innovative technologies in a responsible, ethical, equitable, and sustainable manner to empower its community. “We're empowering our community members with the capabilities of AI, allowing them to work more efficiently, expand their thinking, and innovate, ” stated James Frazee, SDSU’s vice president for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer.

“Whether it’s optimizing tasks, generating new ideas, or addressing complex problems, this technology enhances our creativity, productivity, and collaboration. ” In 2023, SDSU became the first among the 23 CSU universities to initiate an AI microcredential program, featuring customized versions for faculty, staff, and students. This program educates participants on the effective and ethical use of AI tools. To gauge students’ AI tool usage, as well as their insights and expectations for the university, SDSU conducted one of the largest surveys concerning AI in higher education. This survey was repeated in 2024, expanding to include faculty and staff, and the data gathered informed the micro-credential's design. Frazee noted that as the AI field rapidly evolves, the curriculum for the micro-credential will continually adapt. “The micro-credential needs to evolve, and we are committed to ensuring it remains current and relevant, ” Frazee emphasized. “We’re also investigating the possibility of offering more specialized AI micro-credentials, such as those focusing on environmental responsibility. ” AI is proving to be a transformative force, affecting industries in a manner reminiscent of past technological revolutions like the internet and mobile communications, according to Frazee. “Equipping our graduates with AI knowledge positions them to spearhead innovation, adapt to a changing workforce, and forge successful careers, ” said Frazee. “While we recognize the vast potential, we must also approach this technology with care and thoughtfulness, ensuring its applications are responsible, ethical, and impactful. ”
