Shopify Integrates AI-Powered Chatbot Checkouts with Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI
Brief news summary
Starting January 26, Shopify enables merchants to sell products via AI-powered chatbot checkouts like Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot as part of a data-sharing program. Transactions on these AI checkouts currently have no extra fees. By default, products appear on fee-free platforms, while merchants must opt in for platforms that charge fees. Merchants can manage product visibility by toggling AI platform access and blocking product indexing if they wish. Unless opted out, products show up in AI responses with links to merchants’ websites. Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts, launched in December, embed products into AI chat interfaces, allowing users to browse, compare, and purchase within a single conversation, with orders handled through Shopify’s checkout. Additionally, OpenAI’s Instant Checkout, introduced in September, lets users buy items directly in chat; it currently supports Etsy products in the US with plans to add Shopify merchants soon.According to the report, sales completed through chatbot checkouts provided by Google’s AI Model and Gemini, as well as Microsoft’s Copilot, will not incur any additional fees for the time being. Starting Monday, January 26, Shopify will begin offering merchants’ products through these checkout features as part of a data-sharing program the company revealed late last year, the report indicated. By default, these products will be available for purchase on platforms that do not charge extra fees. However, merchants must opt in to have their products listed on platforms that impose such fees, the report explained. Merchants will be able to select the channels where they want to sell by toggling each AI platform on or off, according to the report. Their products will still appear in AI-generated responses along with links to their own websites unless the merchants contact the AI companies or prevent their listings from being indexed by web crawlers, the report added. In December, Shopify announced that its Agentic Storefronts would integrate merchants’ products directly into AI chat interfaces, allowing shoppers to ask questions, compare products, and complete purchases within a single conversation thread. With Agentic Storefronts, the AI agent routes orders into Shopify’s checkout system.
The company noted that centralizing this process minimizes the risk of losing visibility within AI ecosystems it does not control. In September, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, a feature enabling shoppers to complete purchases within the chat itself instead of being redirected to external websites. Initially, this feature supported Etsy products in the U. S. and is planned to expand to include Shopify’s merchants.
