Using Adobe's new AI features, a user has utilized a different aspect ratio for Katsuhiro Otomo's beloved feature, Akira. This modification showcases how AI can be employed to modify existing works by animation creators. The AI user, Eric Groza, who identifies himself as both a creative director and neuropsychologist, emphasizes the level of detail in Akira's hand-painted animation and acknowledges that the film's horizontal format may cause viewers to miss out on intricate details when viewed on vertical screens. To address this, Groza used AI to extend the top and bottom of the screen image, maintaining the art style of the original backgrounds.
Through recomposing and editing scenes as an additional video layer, he was able to achieve this result using Adobe's Beta AI. Groza believes this development is significant as it allows brands, studios, and individual artists to maintain image quality and capture the entirety of the action, providing them with the opportunity to enhance their style and scale their work. While this innovation has garnered mostly positive feedback, some critics argue that altering the filmmaker's original vision by haphazardly adding new imagery may affect the intentional elements of layout and composition in filmmaking. Despite these concerns, Groza remains undeterred and even contemplates launching a Kickstarter campaign to bring alterations to the entire Akira film.
