State legislators across the United States are taking action to regulate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies as federal laws have yet to materialize. Colorado recently enacted comprehensive regulation aimed at mitigating consumer harm and discrimination caused by AI systems. Other states, including New Mexico and Iowa, have focused on regulating computer-generated images in media and campaigns. Delaware has passed the Personal Data Privacy Act, providing residents with rights to data transparency and protection.
While Congress has seen numerous tech regulation bills, none have been passed. Thus, states are enacting their own legislation, with more than 300 AI-related bills introduced in 2024 alone. The laws cover various aspects such as interdisciplinary collaboration, data privacy, transparency, protection against discrimination, elections, schools, and computer-generated explicit images. Many legislators recognize both the risks and potential of AI, with the technology expected to create millions of new jobs worldwide.
