TCLtv+, the streaming service owned by the Chinese electronics group that also owns the TCL Chinese Theatre, is set to launch an AI-focused accelerator called TCL Film Machine. This program aims to offer development, financial support, and production assistance to film and television creatives who want to enhance their work using AI tools. The program will begin with five selected participants, with grants starting at $25k but potentially increasing based on talent and project scope. The streaming service expressed the need for professionals who can effectively apply AI tools to storytelling in the midst of the rapid growth of AI technology. Recognizing the limited avenues available for industry professionals to enhance their expertise in this area, TCLtv+ has launched a production studio to support the projects. A global production team of animators, VFX experts, and AI engineers will collaborate with producers, writers, and actors in the program to create high-quality content using the latest AI technology. Filmmaker Dave Clark, known for his work with companies like Snapchat and Intel, will be a key advisor for the program. Clark, an early adopter of AI, has partnered with various notable actors and activist groups and frequently speaks about AI at prestigious film festivals like Cannes and Berlin. While AI in entertainment remains a subject of controversy, Clark argues that it empowers creators. The first class of the accelerator will have access to the latest AI tools, animators, a budget, and a platform to release their films—the TCL Chinese Theatres and TCLtv+.
The application process, open from June 20 to July 20, is free, and mid-level or above creators in TV and film are encouraged to apply. The program is seeking proven filmmakers experienced in traditional storytelling who are interested in exploring AI to bring their creative vision to life. TCL's chief content officer, Chris Regina, emphasized the importance of nurturing and expanding the AI creative community and the potential for AI to have a significant impact on the creative scene. He mentioned that the program aims to provide access and opportunities to fuel the growth of AI in film and television. Although the initial plan is to support five projects, TCL Film Machine may extend its support to additional projects. TCLtv+ Studios already has several series and specials in development, including both AI-driven and traditional scripted and unscripted projects. Collaboration for these projects will extend beyond the studios' teams to include guild writers, actors, and other key talents in Hollywood. In April, TCLtv+ Studios released a trailer for its first AI love story, "Next Stop Paris. "
