The Brutalist: Adrien Brody's Oscar Odds Complicated by AI Usage

With just over a month until the 97th Academy Awards, it appears that *The Brutalist* is a frontrunner, with many predicting it will win Best Picture and Brady Corbet will take home Best Director. Odds have significantly increased for Adrien Brody to secure his second Best Actor Oscar. However, he might encounter a hurdle, as it has come to light that he used the most effective performance-enhancing technology available today: AI. While Brody has received continuous acclaim for his role as Holocaust survivor and architect László Tóth, it has been disclosed that AI was utilized to enhance his Hungarian accent. Dávid Jancsó, the film's editor and a native Hungarian, explained to RedShark News that while Brody has Hungarian roots, mastering the accent is quite challenging. “It’s not straightforward. Hungarian is an incredibly distinctive language. We trained [Brody and Felicity Jones], and they performed wonderfully, but we also aimed to refine it to the point that not even locals would detect any differences. ” Despite Brody’s commendable skills, the production team explored various avenues to perfect his accent. “For actors from the Anglo-Saxon world, certain sounds can be especially difficult to reproduce. Initially, we attempted to ADR those tricky sounds with the actors. Then, we tried using different actors for ADR, but that approach fell flat.

So, we sought other methods to enhance the accent, ” Jancsó noted. “Much of their Hungarian dialogue has parts of me speaking, too. We were meticulous in preserving their performances. It mainly involved tweaking letters here and there. While you could do this in ProTools, we had so much Hungarian dialogue that we needed to expedite the process, or we’d still be stuck in post-production. ” Although it’s commendable that *The Brutalist* team didn't rush to improve Brody’s accent with AI, opting instead to explore various methods prior to its use, the application of this technology—even if in a seemingly minor role—will likely raise concerns during Oscar voting. Does this reflect Brody’s genuine abilities, or does the involvement of AI undermine his performance?Oscar nominations are due this week, and while it is undeniable that Brody will be nominated, will this news negatively impact his standing as a leading contender for Best Actor? What are your thoughts? Was the use of AI warranted? Will it jeopardize Adrien Brody's chances of winning the Oscar?

Brief news summary

As the 97th Academy Awards approach, *The Brutalist* stands out as a strong contender for Best Picture, with Brady Corbet nominated for Best Director and Adrien Brody gaining traction for Best Actor. Brody’s role as Holocaust survivor László Tóth, however, has ignited controversy over the use of AI to enhance his Hungarian accent. Editor Dávid Jancsó acknowledged that while Brody has Hungarian heritage, perfecting an authentic accent proved challenging, prompting the decision to use AI technology. This decision has sparked critical debates about the authenticity of Brody’s performance. Some critics question whether AI assistance diminishes his acting skills and how this may affect his Oscar prospects. As nominations unfold, the implications of AI in filmmaking could have significant repercussions for Brody's perception in the industry. The key concern is whether the use of AI enhances or undermines his chances at securing an Oscar win at the prestigious event.
