Claimable: Revolutionizing Insurance Claims with AI Technology

Brief news summary

Warris Bokhari founded Claimable to tackle the widespread issue of insurance claim denials in the U.S. healthcare system by leveraging AI technology. Inspired by the protection his disabled parents received in the UK and his own experiences as an ICU doctor, Bokhari was motivated to address the inefficiencies in the U.S. system. Launched in October, Claimable successfully overturns 85% of denied claims, gaining attention amid growing dissatisfaction in the insurance sector. High-profile cases, including those involving UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, and a report by the Kaiser Family Foundation highlighting a 17% denial rate for in-network claims in 2021, emphasize the problem. The service involves patients describing their conditions and the denial's impact. Claimable's AI analyzes clinical data, past appeals, policy details, and medical history to create tailored appeal letters, charging $39.95 per appeal. It supports over 70 FDA-approved treatments, focusing on conditions like autoimmune diseases and migraines, often denied due to medical necessity or network limits. Appeals are sent to insurers and regulators to advocate for patients. Claimable aims to empower patients by focusing on the personal impact of denials. Supported by investors such as Walkabout Ventures and Humanrace Capital, the company has completed seed funding and joined Nvidia’s startup program. Claimable employs approximately 11 people.

Warris Bokhari created Claimable to address the widespread issue of insurance claim denials using AI technology. Bokhari, who has experience in the insurance industry, recognized that claim denials significantly impact the U. S. healthcare system, creating apprehension about seeking medical help. Claimable's AI-powered platform reportedly achieves an 85% success rate in overturning denials. Having worked as an ICU doctor in the UK, Bokhari noted the stark contrast in healthcare between the UK and the US. In the UK, essential treatments were never denied, and Bokhari's family never faced financial ruin from medical costs. Upon moving to the US, Bokhari observed widespread denial of necessary care in his roles, including at Anthem. In response to these challenges, Bokhari launched Claimable about two years ago. Claimable, officially launched in October, aims to combat claim denials across various treatments. Bokhari expressed the need for a solution, noting the flawed nature of the current model for consumers, which leads many to abandon appeals. The recent death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has cast a spotlight on public dissatisfaction with the insurance industry. While the reasons for his shooting are being investigated, many reactions highlight frustrations with insurers.

Although Bokhari condemned any violence, he emphasized that appealing denials is the truly constructive approach. Claim denials have been on the rise for over a decade. According to health policy firm KFF, 17% of in-network claims were denied by HealthCare. gov insurers in 2021, with 41% of appealed claims later reversed. However, only a small fraction of people pursue appeals. The industry's use of algorithms for claim decisions has faced criticism. Claimable assists patients in appealing denials by having them describe their condition and the consequences of denial. The platform uses AI to analyze clinical data, appeal precedents, policy details, and personal medical histories to create tailored appeals swiftly. Each appeal typically costs $39. 95, plus shipping. The platform supports appeals for over 70 FDA-approved treatments for conditions such as autoimmune disorders and migraines, sometimes denied due to issues like medical necessity or being out-of-network. Besides sending appeals to insurance companies, Claimable also notifies relevant regulators. Bokhari believes regulators may underestimate the frequency of denial cases, which are often private tragedies despite making headlines. He insists that patients deserve to have their voices heard, with Claimable providing a means to legitimize their appeals. Claimable secured seed funding in March, with backers including Walkabout Ventures and Humanrace Capital. It's part of Nvidia's startup program and comprises a team of about 11 employees.
