AI Pioneer Fei-Fei Li Secures $230M Funding for Billion-Dollar Startup World Labs
Brief news summary
Fei-Fei Li, known as the “godmother of AI,” is making waves by launching her artificial intelligence startup, World Labs, which recently secured $230 million in funding. Despite a decline in venture investments for women-founded tech companies, Li, along with notable technologists Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall, aims to revolutionize AI through spatial intelligence. Funded by prominent investors, including Andreessen Horowitz, NEA, and Radical Ventures, World Labs is already valued at $1 billion. The company's goal is to create large world models (LWMs) that utilize images and data to generate interactive 3D environments, enhancing the creative processes for professionals like artists and engineers. Li’s significant contributions to AI include the development of ImageNet, a pivotal dataset for computer vision and deep learning, along with her roles at Stanford and Google. Her vision is to elevate AI's capabilities from 2D pixels to rich, spatially aware 3D worlds.**In This Story** As funding for women-led tech companies declines, the “godmother of AI” is establishing a billion-dollar artificial intelligence startup that has just secured hundreds of millions in investment. Fei-Fei Li, a trailblazer in the AI field, has successfully raised $230 million for her startup, World Labs, which officially launched on Friday. Describing itself as “a spatial intelligence AI company, ” World Labs was co-founded by Li alongside renowned technologists Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall. The substantial $230 million investment was spearheaded by Andreessen Horowitz, NEA, and Radical Ventures, according to the startup. Additional backers include Salesforce co-founder Marc Benioff, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, and the venture capital division of Nvidia, known as NVentures. World Labs is set to develop “large world models” (LWMs) that utilize various data types, including images, to create 3D “worlds” that users can interact with and manipulate.
The company claims these models will serve as valuable tools for creatives and professionals in fields such as art and engineering. “Our goal is to elevate AI models from the 2D realm of pixels to fully immersive 3D worlds—both virtual and real—equipping them with a level of spatial intelligence comparable to human understanding, ” stated World Labs. In July, it was reported that World Labs had already reached a valuation of $1 billion. Li's significant contributions to the AI sector include the invention of ImageNet, a crucial dataset that propelled advancements in computer vision and deep learning, often credited as a key factor in the current AI surge. She also serves as co-director of Stanford’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Institute, was previously the director of Stanford’s AI Lab, and has held roles as vice president and chief scientist of AI/ML at Google and Google Cloud, in addition to being a co-founder and chair of the non-profit AI4ALL.
