Brief news summary

The Isuzu Bighorn, a budget-friendly SUV from the 1990s, may lack power and speed, but it impresses car enthusiast Doug DeMuro with its practicality and distinctive features. This Isuzu Trooper, with a mileage of 157,600, stands out at an auction, selling for $6,500, thanks to its rare attributes, notably a diesel engine. The Bighorn offers great passenger convenience, boasting three rows of seats and flexible seating options. The front row even includes heated seats and automatic climate control for added comfort. The vehicle's appeal is further enhanced by unique angled switches, power-adjustable windows, and mirrors. Notable exterior elements, such as a passenger-side fender mirror and Lotus suspension, suggest a collaboration with Lotus. Customized modifications, including 16-inch wheels, rain guards, a manual glow plug system, and a safety-focused startup message on the Panasonic head unit, contribute to the SUV's charm. Furthermore, a Chinese decal featuring a floral Chrysler Pentastar within a shield serves as a prayer for traffic safety and references the Hakusan Hime Shrine, bearing a resemblance to the Dharma Initiative logo. While the Bighorn possesses its own distinct character, the writer acknowledges a slight sense of regret for not acquiring it and remains content with their beloved Ford Flex.

This is the Isuzu Bighorn, and I can assure you that it's a genuine vehicle, despite some characteristics that may give the impression of it being a cheap AI-generated SUV from the 1990s. It possesses a distinct, peculiar nature, offering great practicality, although it may not excel in terms of horsepower and speed. Its unique features could potentially overwhelm even Doug DeMuro. Let's explore this compact SUV, which recently sold at auction for a mere $6, 500. Essentially, the Bighorn is an Isuzu Trooper, a model that was available in the USA. However, it possesses a few remarkable features, such as a diesel engine that was not offered in the United States. With a modest output of only 133 horsepower and 217 lb-ft of torque, it compensates with genuine four-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic transmission. This particular Bighorn has already clocked 157, 600 miles on the odometer, proving a life of adventures. In terms of standard features, it doesn't stray too far from what buyers commonly seek today. It offers three rows of seating, with the second row folding forward and the third row folding upward and sideways, resulting in additional cargo space. Additionally, the front row comes equipped with heated seats. Speaking of comfort, this unique classic SUV also includes automatic climate control.

The power-adjustable windows and mirrors add to the convenience, and even the switches have an endearing design. Rather than opting for a conventional switch panel, Isuzu chose to angle the switches within their housing. The exterior of the Bighorn is just as intriguing. An oddity worth noting is the mirror installed on the front passenger-side fender, aiding drivers in determining the position of their bumper. It features side steps and, just above them, bears a small badge stating "Suspension by Lotus. " Yes, during that time, Lotus collaborated with Isuzu on the suspension systems, and the Bighorn benefited from this partnership. The steering wheel proudly displays a Lotus badge, rather than the usual Isuzu emblem. Moreover, this Bighorn has undergone some custom modifications, including 16-inch wheels, rain guards, a manually-operated glow plug system, and a Panasonic head unit that displays "WARNING - Let's Enjoy Safety Driving" upon startup. Lastly, let's discuss the Chinese sticker on the rear. It showcases what appears to be a floral representation of the Chrysler Pentastar symbol within a shield reminiscent of the Dharma Initiative logo. The words above it translate to "Pray for traffic safety, " while the text beside it refers to the Hakusan Hime Shrine, a Shinto religious gathering place. Although not an original factory decal like the Lotus badges, this sticker offers a glimpse into the unique history of this particular Bighorn. This compact SUV exudes a rather charming character. While I may regret missing out on it, I take solace in the fact that my Ford Flex ranks among the greatest cars ever produced. Photos: Cars & Bids
