The Impact of AI on Music: Balancing Innovation and Authenticity

Brief news summary

At an open mic night, I witnessed an artist perform a song generated by AI, highlighting the influence of AI on music today. The song seemed mechanical and lacked emotional depth, sparking concerns about authenticity in this AI-driven era. On the other hand, AI's role in reviving The Beatles' lost song, "Now and Then," illustrates both its potential and limitations. While AI can help reconstruct lost art, there's a risk of creating predictable and less inventive music. Some record labels view AI as a cost-cutting tool, threatening artists' careers. At Cornell, the emphasis on live performances highlighted their emotional richness—something AI cannot replicate. Despite AI's financial benefits for major platforms, it poses a threat to musicians' livelihoods. For example, Spotify's nine billion dollars in royalty payments in 2023 could decrease due to AI, risking musicians' income. AI challenges music's authenticity, which is crucial for conveying personal experiences. As financial motives threaten artistic integrity, preserving creativity and genuine expression becomes essential. Music, blending art and life, requires the protection of its authenticity to remain true to its essence.

At an open mic, I was surprised when an attendee announced they would play an AI-generated song instead of performing live music. This challenged my perception of music as an art form derived from personal experience, but I was curious to learn more about AI-generated music. I discovered that the Beatles recently released "Now and Then, " restored with AI. This contradiction—AI's ability to revive lost music, contrasting with its potentially soulless output—highlighted a complex issue. AI may offer efficiency and creativity, but it risks making music predictable and displacing human artists.

In contrast, my experience at Cornell was filled with authentic, emotive live performances that AI could never replicate. The music industry's interest in AI, partly driven by potential savings on royalties, threatens the authenticity of music. Although AI might help companies financially, it risks blurring the essence of music, built on genuine expression and creativity. The growing focus on profit over authentic art endangers the music world and the livelihoods of artists. As the industry evolves, it's vital to value music's core ingenuity and emotional expression.
