Is generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) truly causing the downfall of writing? There is a prevalent argument that this technology enables high school and college students to cheat effortlessly on their essay assignments. In response, some educators are rushing to ban the use of writing applications such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Bard AI, Jasper, and Hugging Face, while others seek ways to incorporate these emerging technologies into their teaching methods. However, the panic surrounding this issue may be premature. While media reports often depict GenAI writing bots as the "death" of writing in educational institutions, knee-jerk reactions to these advancements are myopic. The public fails to see the larger picture, not only regarding GenAI writing bots but also in terms of the concepts of GenAI and writing itself. Moral crises associated with technology and writing are not new. We have witnessed similar anxieties with every technology that has interacted with writing production and instruction. Remember the concern surrounding Wikipedia in the early 2000s and the fear that it would impede "actual research" in writing?Educators and institutions held meetings and imposed rules prohibiting access to Wikipedia. Nevertheless, within a decade, the outrage subsided, and nowadays, Wikipedia is commonly utilized in classroom assignments. This illustrates that all technologies, not solely digital or writing-related ones, follow either two paths: either they become ingrained in our everyday practices or they become obsolete as new technologies prove more useful. GenAI writing bots are not destroying writing; instead, they are revitalizing it. Our primary concern should not be how students may exploit ChatGPT, Bard AI, or others to bypass educational values, but rather how we can prepare them and the future workforce to ethically utilize these technologies. Resisting these changes and clinging to nostalgia about traditional writing methods is akin to behaving like an ostrich with its head in the sand. So, what lies ahead for GenAI in writing?Currently, ChatGPT is proficient at producing generic, basic writing. However, as companies develop discipline-specific algorithms, GenAI writing bots will acquire more sophisticated abilities and generate more dynamic content.

Just as the role of a "Social Media Marketing Manager" emerged with the growth of online commerce, we are likely to witness the emergence of a prevalent career path known as "Prompt Engineer" – someone who can elicit valuable outcomes from GenAI. Consider the U. S. outdoor recreational industry, which contributes 1. 9% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and represents approximately $454 billion annually. This industry, like many others, relies on the rapid production of extensive content such as magazines, product descriptions, travel guides, advertisements, videos, reviews, and social media posts. Once GenAI writing bots tailored to this industry's needs become more developed or tech companies provide access to these bots, they will evolve to generate the necessary and effective content. Students will need skills in crafting prompts that guide GenAI-driven content for such industries. Subscription-based GenAI services will eventually become the norm for a significant portion of commercially consumed content, and many companies will develop their own writing bots to cater to their specific and private needs. Companies like Jasper AI are already investing in this direction, and with almost 1, 000 new GenAI platforms launching every week, the model seems to be moving towards subscription-based access to exclusive GenAI platforms. Consequently, educational institutions must redefine their understanding of the role of writing in education, let go of entrenched beliefs about writing instruction, and teach students how to navigate future environments supported by GenAI. Thankfully, not all educational institutions and teachers are hastily embracing an anti-AI stance. Institutions like the University of Florida (UF), with its forward-thinking AI Initiative, are using the current technophobic reaction as an opportunity to critically examine the role of AI in teaching and learning. Rather than imposing restrictions, UF administrators are organizing roundtables and symposia to discuss the integration of GenAI writing bots in classrooms. When all is said and done, GenAI is not an enemy to writers or writing educators – it is merely a new technological tool for teaching, and there is much we can learn from it if we are willing to listen. Sidney I. Dobrin, Ph. D. , is a professor and chair of the Department of English at the University of Florida. He is also the director of the Trace Innovation Initiative, a member of the Florida Institute for National Security, and an Adobe Digital Thought Leader. Furthermore, he has authored "Talking About Generative AI: A Guide for Educators" as well as "AI and Writing. "
