Studies have shown that almost 50% of heart attacks are "silent, " meaning that individuals experience no symptoms prior to the cardiac event. To address this issue, Fountain Life, a medical technology company, has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) coronary artery scan that aims to detect pre-symptomatic heart conditions. This outpatient procedure, which takes less than an hour, involves injecting a dye into the vein and conducting a quick CAT scan of the heart. The AI technology then analyzes the results, providing a comprehensive assessment of the individual's artery health, including the presence and characteristics of plaque. Unlike traditional methods, which rely on human interpretation, the AI algorithm can accurately identify and differentiate between calcified (stable) and uncalcified (high risk) plaques. Additionally, this test not only helps identify signs of risk but also offers a pathway for individuals to reverse heart disease. Compared to more invasive procedures like a standard "cath lab, " which involves inserting a catheter into the artery, the AI coronary artery scan offers a non-invasive and cost-effective alternative. Presently, Fountain Life's AI health services are available to self-insured employers and high-end residential centers, with plans to eventually partner with physicians for wider accessibility. Founded in 2021, Fountain Life aims to revolutionize the healthcare paradigm by shifting from reactive and episodic care to proactive and continuous monitoring. By leveraging AI technology trained on data from asymptomatic individuals, the company seeks to detect diseases early and track their progression or regression. To ensure accuracy, Fountain Life has collaborated with functional doctors to train the AI model on large datasets.

In addition to the heart scan, the company also offers a full-body MRI combined with AI analysis to detect other conditions, such as cancer or neurogenerative diseases. Cardiologists recognize the instrumental role of AI in body imaging techniques, particularly for early plaque detection and cancer diagnosis. AI algorithms can not only identify plaques that narrow blood vessels but also distinguish unstable and vulnerable plaques, thereby aiding treatment decisions and intervention strategies. One patient's story highlights the life-saving potential of this technology. Despite leading an active and healthy lifestyle, the individual discovered potential blockages in their arteries through the AI coronary artery scan, leading to timely medical intervention and bypass surgery. This experience emphasizes the importance of early detection and prevention, underscoring the significant impact that AI technology can have on healthcare outcomes. Fountain Life's AI technology is designed to complement cardiologists' expertise rather than replace them. Similar to how a jumbo jet operates on autopilot but still requires human monitoring, there must always be a skilled healthcare professional involved in the process. The adoption of AI in healthcare has been relatively slow due to factors such as limited awareness among physicians and challenges associated with payment models. However, the ultimate goal is to lower costs, improve outcomes, and address health issues at their root cause through early detection and affordable preventative measures.
