Elon Musk's Social Media Platform to Share User Data for AI Training

The social media company led by Elon Musk has notified users that starting November 15, their data may be utilized for training AI models by third-party "collaborators. " This appears to extend beyond Musk’s own Grok AI, allowing the company to license data to external entities, similar to practices employed by Reddit. This could represent a significant revenue source for the company, which has experienced a decline in advertising revenue since Musk's acquisition. Although the updated policy indicates that users can opt out, it does not clarify the process for doing so. According to the update, “Depending on your settings, or if you choose to share your data, we may share or disclose your information with third parties. ” It further states, “If you do not opt out, in some cases, those receiving the information may use it for their own independent purposes in addition to those outlined in X’s Privacy Policy, such as training their artificial intelligence models, whether generative or otherwise. ” If users have objections regarding this change (or any other issue with Twitter/X), their sole recourse will be the U. S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas or state courts located in Tarrant County, Texas. This is notable for several reasons. First, the company is not based in that county; its headquarters is 218 miles south in Bastrop, near Austin, following its relocation from San Francisco.

Additionally, the judges in the U. S. District Court in that county were appointed by George W. Bush and Donald Trump, and the county often favors conservative viewpoints in legal matters, while the district that Twitter/X is associated with has a lower number of Republican-appointed judges. Musk has emerged as a major donor to Trump and the Republican Party, contributing $75 million to his America PAC, a political action committee aimed at supporting Trump’s presidential bid in November. Moreover, Twitter/X is implementing measures to combat data scraping. Users found accessing or viewing over 1 million posts per day will incur a $15, 000 fine for every additional million, the company confirmed.

Brief news summary

Elon Musk's social media platform will begin utilizing user data for training AI models by third-party partners, starting November 15. This move aims to create a new revenue stream amid declining advertising revenues since Musk's acquisition. Users can choose to opt out, though the opt-out process lacks clarity. If not opted out, users' information may be shared for purposes beyond those outlined in X's Privacy Policy, specifically for AI training. Additionally, users with platform-related issues will now be restricted to resolving them in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas or Tarrant County state courts. This is notable as the company is not headquartered in these areas, and the judges there are typically conservative. Musk has also become a prominent supporter of the Republican Party. To further protect data, the platform is introducing measures against data scrapers, imposing a $15,000 penalty for users who access more than 1 million posts per day.
