University of Florida Launches First Self-Service AI Platform in U.S. Higher Education

The University of Florida Information Technology has introduced the first comprehensive, self-service AI platform in U. S. higher education institutions. This platform grants students, faculty, and staff access to safe and extensive AI services, integrating AI into the university's daily educational and business practices. Named NaviGator AI, this platform consists of chat, toolkit, and assistant features. NaviGator AI Chat allows UF faculty, students, and staff to interact with their data privately in a GPT-like environment, using Large Language Models (LLMs). The NaviGator AI Toolkit provides direct access to multiple LLMs that power various applications across the campus. Since the soft launch of NaviGator AI Chat and Toolkit in July, nearly 1, 000 faculty, students, and staff have generated an impressive equivalent of 3. 4 million pages. The private environment ensures that user data is not utilized in training any available models. Each LLM incorporates human values and goals to provide reliable and non-harmful responses. NaviGator AI Chat can generate concise summaries of documents, review written drafts, create artwork and logos, develop study plans, assist with coding, and provide help with challenging subjects.
To begin using NaviGator AI, please visit https://it. ufl. edu/ai/uf-navigator-ai/ and log in with your GatorLink. Elias Eldayrie, UF's vice president and chief information officer, stated, "The launch of NaviGator AI signifies a significant milestone in our AI journey, reflecting our commitment to enhancing research, education, and the overall academic experience. " Powered by UF's supercomputer, HiPerGator, NaviGator AI stands as the first and most powerful supercomputer owned and operated by a U. S. university. HiPerGator houses 1, 120 NVIDIA A100 80 gigabyte GPUs. The UF-NVIDIA partnership, established in 2019, enabled UF to expand its supercomputing capabilities to include AI computational abilities through HiPerGator. Currently, Navigator AI hosts 26 LLMs, including NVIDIA Inference Microservices (NIMs) for Meta's Llama, Mistral, and ESMFold protein; OpenAI's GPT and DALL-E; Google's Gemini; Stability AI's Stable Diffusion; and Anthropic's Claude. NaviGator AI represents UF's latest achievement as a national leader in AI innovation, aligning with its vision of equipping every student, faculty, and staff member to become empowered AI users. The UF-NVIDIA partnership has positioned UF as the pioneering AI university, successfully integrating AI across its curriculum through faculty support, innovative teaching solutions, and AI training opportunities available to all members of the campus community. University of Florida Information Technology is expanding this suite to expedite adoption and bring the university closer to incorporating AI as a practicable tool.
