We are entering a new era of technology where generative artificial intelligence (AI) has gained widespread recognition. SAP's Business AI has the potential to revolutionize how businesses operate and address their technology challenges with SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). Generative AI offers an array of opportunities to simplify and enhance our work lives. At SAP Sapphire, we unveiled several use cases that we are currently developing. To ensure the relevance, reliability, and responsibility of AI in a business context, we are leveraging SAP BTP as the platform to harness generative AI capabilities. These capabilities within SAP BTP will improve the developer experience, integration processes, automation, analytics, planning activities, and streamline administrative tasks. Allow me to illustrate three use cases that demonstrate how AI capabilities in SAP BTP can accelerate application development, outline a reference architecture for leveraging large language models (LLMs), and apply the architecture through a concrete example, such as an app that helps monitor individual CO2 footprints. Creating enterprise-ready applications typically requires a significant amount of time and skilled professionals. Even experienced developers often seek assistance from documentation and online resources. Our team at SAP Labs is dedicated to simplifying developers' lives. For instance, we are utilizing generative AI to automatically generate SAP BTP applications based on the cloud application programming (CAP) model. In the future, developers will be able to describe an application's capabilities, and SAP Business AI will generate a proposal for the actual application. This means that developers can leverage SAP BTP to swiftly build applications, such as SAP S/4HANA Cloud extensions, in mere hours rather than weeks or months. This not only empowers developers to be more efficient and productive but also enables organizations to respond promptly to business needs with innovative solutions. SAP BTP applications have the flexibility to utilize any LLM or powerful tools available through hyperscale providers or open source models. We are equipping SAP BTP application developers with the ability to select the most suitable LLM for their specific use case.

We have published a reference architecture that facilitates developers in binding their SAP BTP applications to OpenAI's GPT or any other LLM. This empowers developers to seamlessly combine LLMs with SAP S/4HANA and other SAP solutions using our CAP model on SAP BTP. Access to LLMs, such as GPT models, will be provided through SAP's AI Core, offering advantages such as context validation and portability between LLMs. With this architecture, developers can benefit from our collaboration with hyperscale providers on SAP Single-Sign On and Private Link, ensuring secure data management within the network backbone without exposure to the public internet. SAP Business AI applies robust tools and services responsibly, ensuring that use cases remain highly relevant and deliver reliable outcomes for our customers' businesses. As the saying goes, "You cannot manage what you cannot measure, " which particularly applies to sustainability. However, AI provides a new lever to support sustainability efforts. Using the reference architecture, we have built a sample app on SAP BTP through a customer co-innovation project with a finance industry enterprise. This app helps bank customers gain insight into how their consumption habits contribute to their carbon footprint, encourages climate consciousness, and suggests behavior adaptations. The app matches purchase data from banking customers with corresponding carbon emission information provided by our sustainability partner, Connect Earth. By integrating customers' banking data with Connect Earth data using SAP's CAP model, the app utilizes SAP's AI Core on SAP BTP to summarize and recommend actions for improvement through Microsoft Azure OpenAI services. This example showcases how the previously mentioned reference architecture for Microsoft Azure OpenAI services can be implemented via the shared sample code on GitHub. These are just a few examples demonstrating how SAP is utilizing generative AI to create positive change for professional developers, as well as our customers and users. It is an exhilarating time to be alive, and SAP is ready to lead enterprise software into the generative AI age and support our customers as a steadfast partner throughout this transformative journey. Juergen Mueller, CTO, and member of the Executive Board of SAP SE.
