The University of New Mexico is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) and integrating it into higher education. UNM organizations across campus are using AI to enhance the academic experience for students and advance research discoveries. In support of this, UNM has launched airesources. unm. edu, a website that serves as a central hub for the university's AI efforts and initiatives. UNM Provost James Holloway explains, "The practical deployments of Large Language Models like ChatGPT and other generative AI tools in higher education have created much excitement. We must view these as new tools to support our educational and research mission, even though we are still learning how to use them effectively. " The website features dedicated sections for instructors, students, and researchers, providing curated information and resources for each group. It also promotes upcoming AI trainings and workshops that are open to the UNM community. Those interested in staying updated on the university's AI developments can sign up for regular updates on the website. Here are some of the AI activities scheduled for this semester that demonstrate UNM's commitment to advancing the responsible use of AI: 1. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is hosting instructor workshops on generative AI, exploring its origin, how it works, ethical considerations, and current uses and limitations in the classroom. Workshop dates and registration details are available on ctl. unm. edu. 2. The University Libraries' Coffee and Code Workshop series includes two sessions that incorporate AI in coding: "Engineering ChatGPT Prompts for Python Code" (Nov. 3) and "Engineering ChatGPT Prompts for R Code" (Dec. 3). Registration information can be found at library. unm. edu. 3.
The UNM Health Sciences Library & Informatics Center will hold a session titled "AI in Higher Education and Research" as part of the BioMISS seminar series. The session will take place on Thursday, Dec. 7, 10 a. m. - 11 a. m. (MST) on Zoom, discussing AI trends and its application in research. Presenters include Dr. Leo S Lo, dean and professor, UNM College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences, and Laura Hall, division head, Resources, Archives & Discovery, UNM HSLIC. 4. The Organization, Information, and Learning Sciences (OILS) academic program is collaborating to offer an AI Literacy course, empowering students with a foundational understanding of AI concepts and applications. This pilot course will be available to UNM students in the second half of Fall 2023. To complement the AI Resources website, University Libraries has created a useful LibGuide (libguides. unm. edu/AIinEducation) that provides resources on generative AI and its applications in education. Dr. Leo Lo, dean of the College of University Libraries and Learning Sciences, states, "Artificial Intelligence represents the next frontier in educational innovation, and we are dedicated to harnessing its potential responsibly. The launch of our AI resources website and the collaboration across campus demonstrates our commitment to equipping our university community with the tools and knowledge needed for the AI-driven future. We are not just embracing technology; we are shaping the future of education. " UNM invites everyone to join them in exploring the potential of AI in higher education and research. To receive updates on AI activities, sign up at airesources. unm. edu.
