This study, conducted by the Pew Research Center, aimed to explore the exposure of American workers to artificial intelligence (AI) in their jobs. The study specifically focused on the impact of AI on different groups of workers, such as men, women, and racial and ethnic groups. It also included survey findings on how American adults perceive the personal impact of AI. The study does not make any conclusions regarding job loss or job creation, nor does it consider the role of robots. The analysis primarily utilizes data from the Occupational Information Network (O*NET), Version 27. 3, which rates the importance of various work activities in different occupations. These activities were grouped into three categories based on their likely exposure to AI: low, medium, and high. Occupations were ranked based on the relative importance of these activities, with the top 25% being categorized as least or most exposed, while the remaining occupations were considered to have medium exposure.
The data on employment, earnings, and demographic profiles were obtained from the Current Population Survey (IPUMS). A portion of the analysis also relied on a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center, involving 11, 004 U. S. adults who are members of the American Trends Panel (ATP). The survey data was weighted to be representative of the U. S. adult population in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, partisan affiliation, education, and other categories. The report provides a comprehensive analysis of AI and its potential impact on various aspects of the workforce, with a focus on occupations and workers' perceptions.
