In Gloria Steinem’s living room, which has hosted nearly six decades of feminist movements, we introduced one of feminism's key figures to AI tools for the first time, marking a significant convergence of history and future potential. Artificial intelligence holds the promise to revolutionize the fight for equality, but its impact will hinge on whether women and marginalized groups can engage with and influence this rapidly evolving technology. Unfortunately, we face a harsh reality: women are currently trailing in this new arena. With less than a third of AI professionals and only 18% of AI researchers being women, the underrepresentation issue is critical. It extends beyond just the workforce; women need to actively use AI tools in their everyday lives, with only 28% of global enrollments in AI training programs being women. Studies indicate that women are 16 percentage points less likely than men to utilize AI tools at work, creating a cycle of hesitation that hinders their advancement in both professional and societal realms. Yet, this moment also holds promise. Anyone can engage with AI tools—many of which are free—without the need for a computer science background or corporate support. This technology offers the potential to accelerate progress, enabling women to access mentorship at any hour and learn new skills at their own pace, thus liberating them from time-consuming tasks that have traditionally hindered their productivity. AI could significantly address the systemic barriers that women face, particularly concerning mentorship. Without established role models, many women lack the guidance that men often receive through networks.
For example, women are 24% less likely to receive senior-level advice, with the gap widening for women of color. AI tools can offer accessible mentorship, coaching women in crucial conversations and supporting them through challenges they face in their careers. Moreover, AI can help mitigate the confidence gap that has historically limited women's participation in various fields. Tools that critique communicative styles or assist with negotiation preparations can empower women to convey their competencies effectively. Research indicates that when women use these technologies, they often exceed their male peers, demonstrating that the barriers to entry are more about access and training than capability. However, it’s essential to recognize the embedded biases within AI technologies, which can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and unequal treatment. Therefore, women's involvement in AI development is crucial; those who have fought for gender equality can help identify and rectify biases in AI systems, ensuring that these technologies respect women’s rights and dignity. The accessibility of AI tools invites women to explore their possibilities. Simple, free programs can assist with everyday tasks, and sharing experiences with others can foster learning and collaboration—echoing the spirit of solidarity that has characterized the feminist movement for decades. We stand at a crossroads: will we allow AI to reinforce existing power dynamics, or will we leverage it to forge a more equitable future? As we left Gloria’s apartment, she encapsulated the opportunity this technology presents by stating, “You've created a whole universe here that didn't exist before. "
