There are two distinct groups of individuals when it comes to technology. The first group desires a comprehensive device that combines various functions into one, be it a phone, car, or TV. The second group prefers dedicated devices that specialize in fewer tasks but excel at them. Unfortunately, the latter group has been overshadowed in recent years, especially in the television industry, as evident at CES 2024 with the overwhelming presence of artificial intelligence (AI). Every press release and conference emphasized the inclusion of AI. However, it's important to note that AI is simply an acronym for "artificial intelligence" and represents a new approach to interpreting and processing data. Manufacturers showcased different implementations of AI in TVs at various events in Las Vegas, highlighting the advancements made in recent years. Scott Ramirez, the Vice President of Marketing and Development at TCL, stated in their press conference that "better processing leads to improved picture quality, " and he's absolutely right. AI-powered upscaling has been in use for some time now, with Nvidia's Shield TV device incorporating it back in 2017. Now, TCL is expanding this AI-powered upscaling to all their 2024 TVs, utilizing three different processors: AIPQ in the S5 and Q6 models, AIPQ Pro in the QM7 and QM8 models, and AIPQ Ultra in the colossal 115-inch QM89 TV. CES unveiled more than just content upscaling; manufacturers introduced features that go beyond the norm. David Gold, the Vice President of Hisense International and President of Hisense Americas, emphasized that their Hi-View Engine chipsets provide a new era of user experience, not only achieving superior picture quality and performance but also tailoring experiences for the entire family. Doug Kern, Head of Marketing at Hisense USA, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how different features, technologies, and images on the screen should work harmoniously to enhance the viewing experience.

Additionally, Hisense is even incorporating face detection to refine the appearance of faces on the screen. LG took AI integration a step further, presenting it as an integral part of their entire ecosystem rather than just a feature in individual products. LG's CEO, William (Joowan) Cho, spoke at their CES press conference, describing their vision for AI as an "orchestrated intelligence. " This comprehensive approach involves understanding customers' needs through interactive conversation, contextual understanding, and ultimately generating optimal solutions by orchestrating physical devices. LG TVs can now identify different users by their voice and apply the corresponding user profile accordingly. Samsung also embraces a holistic approach by applying AI across their entire product range. In an interview at CES, Jay Kim, the Executive Vice President of Samsung Visual Display Business, discussed the integration of traditional computing processors, graphics processors, and neural processors to create a seamless experience for users. He highlighted that ordinary consumers may not even realize if a neural processing unit is at work, but they will appreciate the exceptional new experiences facilitated by it in their interactions with Samsung devices. Looking ahead, TCL and Hisense have the potential to become the top TV brands in the U. S. In 2023, TCL introduced its impressive QM8 Mini-LED TV and other models like the Q7, which boasts a full-array local dimming backlight system, quantum dots, high brightness, and other desirable features at an affordable price. Hisense also displayed significant progress with their technological advancements and partnerships with major sports organizations. CES 2023 showcased an array of remarkable TVs from various manufacturers, indicating that the conference has regained its grandeur. However, there was a notable decrease in the number of new 8K products, raising questions about the future of this format. In conclusion, AI is revolutionizing the television industry, offering enhanced processing power, improved picture quality, and tailored user experiences. TCL and Hisense are emerging as strong contenders in the TV market, challenging the dominance of established brands like Samsung and LG. CES 2023 proved to be an exciting event, showcasing the latest advancements in TV technology and leaving us eager to witness further innovations in the future.
