According to Anna Demeo, founder of Climate Tech Strategic Advisors, teams will become leaner, limiting the hiring of junior developers and interns as AI takes on more responsibilities in coding, thereby creating a performance gap between A and B players. Remaining developers will need to be adept critical thinkers who collaborate across departments. Demeo notes a shift where senior developers act as editors of AI-generated code, rather than mere writers, focusing on aligning code with business objectives. Future teams may consist of a product manager, UX designer, and a software architect using AI tools to create and refine prototypes, as predicted by David Brooks of Copado. Despite fears of job losses—particularly for junior developers—Brooks indicates that a reduction in jobs may ultimately lead to increased efficiency, where fewer engineers could produce the same output as before.

Training for roles like software architects might face challenges due to fewer entry-level positions. Though the transformation hasn’t reached its peak, a GitHub survey revealed that over 97% of developers utilize AI coding tools, with Copilot usage climbing significantly in recent months. However, about 75% of IT professionals express concerns over AI rendering their skills obsolete. Some experts, like Ed Watal, expect an initial increase in team size to incorporate AI coaching but foresee a decline in the long run as project complexity reduces. Additionally, low-code/no-code tools will allow more non-technical staff to create applications, disrupting traditional development roles. Others, including Marcus Merrell, caution against overestimating the benefits of AI coding assistants, advocating for a balanced approach rather than drastic structural changes or staffing cuts based on inflated productivity dreams. Merrell believes generative AI is unlikely to replace developers entirely; instead, low-code/no-code platforms will have a more significant impact on job dynamics.
