Now let's discuss the popular topic of artificial intelligence in schools. This new technology is becoming more prevalent in classrooms. Joining us at four is Judy Cohen, a long-time Milwaukee educator and founder of Lakeside Educational Services. Thank you, Judy, for being with us. Many schools, teachers, parents, and students are facing the challenge of incorporating AI. So let's start with the teachers. How are they including AI in their lesson plans?Well, it's important to acknowledge that AI is here to stay and will continue to grow. Teachers are developing lesson plans, worksheets, letters, and emails using AI. However, the concern lies with the students. If you want to know how to use AI, ask your student. They are much more knowledgeable about it than we are. Kids are aware of AI, chatGPT, virtual assistants, chatbots, and they can teach you how to utilize them. Now, as a parent, how can you ensure your child is genuinely doing the work and not cheating? The best approach is to have your child sit down with you and demonstrate how to interact with a website that incorporates AI. Prompt it and observe the response. We are well aware that some of the information AI provides might not be entirely accurate. Here's a crucial piece of advice for parents: remind your child that they are communicating with a machine, not a human being.
Take the information for what it's worth. However, if your child is struggling or encountering difficulties, encourage them to talk to a human being, such as their teachers or parents. This is extremely important. When chatGPT was introduced, schools were suddenly faced with the question of whether to allow its use on the school computers. One professor I spoke with remarked that ignoring it would not make it go away. We need to figure out how to work with it and prepare our students because they will encounter AI in the workplace. Some teachers are already instructing their classes on how to use AI correctly, highlighting both the benefits and drawbacks. As a parent, it would be wise to engage with your child's teacher and inquire about receiving instructions for navigating this new landscape. Contact the school system, the superintendent, or the head of the Department of English. Will they educate parents on this matter? Our children already know how to use AI, and now it's our turn to learn. At the University of Maryland, an experiment was conducted where a college administrator was presented with two essays. The task was to identify which one was prompted by AI and which one was written by a human being. It took her some time, but eventually, she determined that the essay which showcased empathy, passion, and a touch of imperfection belonged to a human. Professors recommend testing children based on what is discussed in the classroom to avoid these challenges. Thank you, Judy Cohen, for sharing your insights this afternoon.
