Argentinian-Australian 3D artist Damián Gaume has been recognized by Pink Floyd for his outstanding contribution in the field of AI. The classic rock band's drummer, Nick Mason, along with a panel of judges, selected Gaume as one of the winners in an animated music video competition held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side of the Moon. Gaume's video for the song "Any Colour You Like" has sparked a significant online controversy due to its use of generative artificial intelligence. In a behind-the-scenes video on the band's YouTube channel, Gaume shed light on his creative process. "I utilized AI as a technique to create animation, " he explained. "As a 3D artist myself, I wanted to explore a completely different approach and venture into new territory. I worked with Stable Diffusion, which was installed locally rather than being used online. I personally trained my own models and employed Blender to generate trigger images, which provided fresh ideas from the AI.
Prompts were used as well. It was an enjoyable experience, and I am now further delving into AI content creation. " Both Gaume and a representative from Pink Floyd have yet to respond to requests for comment. The Dark Side of the Moon competition aimed to select one winner for each of the album's 10 songs. Mason expressed gratitude in a video, stating, "We were truly overwhelmed by the response, with over 900 entries. Each submission was thoroughly reviewed, and the judges carefully made their selections. The films came from different corners of the world and spanned various animation genres. The level of skill and effort invested was incredibly impressive, and on behalf of the band, I want to extend our gratitude to all participants. " Some viewers online expressed disappointment over Gaume's victory, as they felt that his use of AI overshadowed the work of artists who created their entries by hand. However, it is important to note that Gaume did not secure one of the top three positions, which would have come with a cash prize.
