DAF Launches CLARA Platform for Enhanced AI Transparency and Collaboration

The Chief Information Office of the Department of the Air Force has introduced a new platform, called CLARA, with the objective of enhancing transparency in its artificial intelligence and machine learning initiatives. CLARA serves as a centralized repository, offering information, progress updates, and collaboration opportunities on projects related to AI. The Department aims to keep stakeholders informed and aligned regarding these technologies to ensure effective utilization. Acting DAF Chief Data and AI Officer Chandra Donelson emphasized the importance of providing clarity and transparent access to resources for every warfighter. CLARA will monitor the progress, expenditure, and potential duplication of initiatives as the Department explores and implements AI advancements.
It will also facilitate compliance with Congress' requirement of maintaining an AI inventory to track spending and assess the impact on mission readiness. The DAF AI Launch Point, established in April, acts as a centralized platform that provides information on policies, strategy, training, education, and a means for airmen and guardians to experiment with AI-enabled technologies through the AI Exchange App Store. One notable tool is NIPRGPT 1. 0, an experimental AI chatbot that enables testing of different large language models in real-world scenarios. The department is also exploring the incorporation of a retrieval-augmented generation model, NIPRGPT 1. 0+, to combine large language models with internal data and tailor them for specific use cases.
