Dario Amodei Predicts AI to Write Majority of Software Code Soon

Brief news summary

Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, predicts a significant shift in software development due to AI advancements, suggesting that AI could achieve 90% autonomy in coding tasks within the next three to six months. During a Council on Foreign Relations event, he emphasized the need for human oversight in early design stages but anticipates a future where AI independently manages coding processes, which could have profound effects across various industries. As a co-founder of Anthropic and former leader at OpenAI, Amodei believes society is still coming to terms with AI's impact on daily life and employment. This sentiment is echoed by tech leaders like Garry Tan of Y Combinator, who estimates that by 2025, 25% of startup founders will increasingly rely on AI for coding, with AI capable of generating as much as 95% of code. Additionally, Kristalina Georgieva from the IMF warns that AI could affect up to 40% of global employment, leading to a paradox where productivity might rise in some sectors, potentially causing decreased labor demand, lower wages, and job losses overall.

Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, predicts that AI may soon be responsible for coding the majority of software. He stated that within 12 months, AI could be "writing essentially all of the code. " At a Council on Foreign Relations event on March 10, Amodei expressed confidence that AI will significantly transform every industry, stating, "I think we will be there in three to six months, where AI is writing 90% of the code. Then, in a year, we might find ourselves in a scenario where AI is generating nearly all of the code. " He acknowledged that software developers would continue to play a role in the short term, as humans will need to provide the AI models with design features and parameters. However, he believes that eventually, AI systems will take over these tasks entirely. "I think that eventually, all those little islands will be addressed by AI systems. We will reach a stage where AI can perform all the activities that humans do, and I expect this to happen across every sector, " Amodei added. Previously working at OpenAI, Amodei co-founded Anthropic in 2021, and the company has since garnered billions in funding from major tech players like Google and Amazon. This isn’t the first occasion Amodei has highlighted the drastic influence that AI may have on various aspects of life. In a conversation with The New York Times last month, he remarked that many individuals are not yet fully aware of the potential impacts AI could have on their lives and careers. "I think people will come to realize both the risks and benefits to a much greater extent in the next two years, " he mentioned during the Times' "Hard Fork" podcast, which aired on February 28.

Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider regarding Amodei’s statements. Amodei is not alone in noting AI's potential to displace software developers. Garry Tan, president and CEO of Y Combinator, pointed out in an X post on March 5 that 25% of the founders in their Winter 2025 batch are significantly utilizing AI to develop their software. "For 25% of the Winter 2025 batch, 95% of lines of code are LLM generated. That's not a typo, " Tan emphasized. Additionally, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva noted last year that she anticipates AI will affect around 40% of jobs worldwide. "Approximately half of the jobs at risk may experience gains from AI integration, improving productivity, while the other half may see AI take over tasks currently done by humans, potentially reducing labor demand, leading to lower wages and diminished hiring, " Georgieva wrote in a blog post in January 2024. "In extreme scenarios, some of these jobs may vanish, " she added.
