China is likely to abandon the creation of unified national artificial intelligence (AI) legislation due to significant disagreements between industry experts and academics. Zheng Ge, a professor of public law at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, stated that the rapid evolution of AI technology makes it difficult to determine the appropriate timing for such legislation. Instead, sector-specific regulations will be implemented to accommodate the constantly evolving nature of AI. This decision comes after the European Union implemented the world's first AI legislation earlier this year.

The EU's AI Act categorizes AI systems into different risk levels and imposes restrictions accordingly. China is expected to take a more balanced approach to AI regulation, aiming to promote development while mitigating potential risks. Talks between major powers, including China, the US, and the EU, have emphasized managing AI risks collectively.
