The Future of AI: Revolutionizing the Workforce and Journalism

For nearly two years now, I have been hearing about the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the world. AI enthusiasts claim that its impact on humanity will surpass even the invention of cars or the discovery of fire. While these claims are often made, they rarely delve into the specifics of how AI can enhance my job. As with any technological advancement, I understand the need to incorporate new tools into my work, but so far, AI hasn't significantly altered my role at WBJ. I previously experimented with an AI image generator for an illustration relating to maternal morbidity, but none of its suggestions met my expectations. Currently, the use of a chatbot to assist with social media posts requires extensive editing, and I find it faster and more effective to write them manually. In light of the disappointing outcomes produced by AI-integrated Google Search results, I am reconsidering its use as my primary search engine. Nevertheless, AI is undeniably a force that will shape the future. In a prominent feature titled "Training the workforce in AI" in the July 22 edition, WBJ Editorial Intern Sara Bedigian explores how colleges and universities in Central Massachusetts are incorporating AI into their curricula.

This step aims to prepare a workforce equipped with the necessary skills for the evolving technological landscape while addressing the benefits and potential drawbacks of using AI. Although current statistics indicate that only around 4% of businesses are actively employing AI, the consensus is that its adoption will substantially increase in the future. While AI may presently be a source of frustration for many, those who understand its potential are likely to thrive in the future economy. Additionally, AI is also shaping WBJ's operations in a few ways. Our reporters now sign their names on our online stories, underscoring that our content is exclusively produced by human journalists. Moreover, WBJ is developing an AI policy intended to ensure ethical utilization of AI while adhering to the principles of journalism. In another feature from the July 22 edition called "Home care, with the home, " we employed a preexisting AI-generated image to complement a story on homelessness. While these changes may not rival the discovery of fire, they represent the initial steps toward a future in which AI plays a role in our lives.

Brief news summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely discussed, but its true potential to enhance our work remains unclear. At WBJ, attempts to integrate AI image generators and chatbots have been unsuccessful, leading me to rely on my own skills for tasks like writing social media posts. The mediocre performance of AI in Google Search has also raised doubts about its reliability. Despite its current limitations, AI holds promise for the future. Integration into local colleges and universities shows businesses are likely to adopt it in the coming years. Understanding AI's potential will become crucial in the future economy. AI has already started impacting WBJ's operations. Reporters now sign their online stories to highlight human involvement, and an AI policy is being developed to ensure ethical usage and uphold journalistic principles. While not as groundbreaking as the discovery of fire, the inclusion of an AI-generated image in a recent story shows progress towards a future powered by AI.
