GE Healthcare Acquires Intelligent Ultrasound's AI Software for $51 Million

GE Healthcare has announced its acquisition of Intelligent Ultrasound Group's clinical artificial intelligence (AI) software business for a sum of approximately $51 million. This purchase will grant GE control over AI-powered image analysis tools, which will be integrated into its ultrasound portfolio. These tools are expected to enhance workflows and improve ease of use. The decision to sell the assets was made by Intelligent Ultrasound due to slower-than-expected growth in clinical AI sales, which made it difficult to finance further developments that would increase the value of the business. GE had previously integrated one of Intelligent Ultrasound's software into its portfolio, specifically the Scannav Assist AI, which powers GE's SonoLyst AI software on its Voluson ultrasound machines. The clinical version of Scannav Anatomy Peripheral Nerve Block software was sold by Intelligent Ultrasound to other customers. In an effort to tap into the main market for future growth, the company had begun developing other products such as Scannav FetalCheck for gestational age estimation and Scannav Liver. However, sales growth was slower than expected, leading Intelligent Ultrasound to conclude that developing additional products independently would require funding beyond its current resources.

As a result, the decision was made to sell the business instead of pursuing independent development. GE views this acquisition as a means to advance future development through an AI innovation pipeline. Researchers and developers from Intelligent Ultrasound will join GE as part of the deal. It is worth noting that GE previously expanded its AI capabilities through the acquisition of Caption Health in 2023. While the sale of the clinical AI business means that Intelligent Ultrasound will discontinue selling Scannav Anatomy Peripheral Nerve Block, they will continue to support existing customers. The GE acquisition does not impact NeedleTrainer and NeedleTrainer Plus. GE plans to finance the transaction using its available cash and anticipates that the deal will be finalized in the fourth quarter.

Brief news summary

GE Healthcare has announced its acquisition of Intelligent Ultrasound Group's clinical artificial intelligence (AI) software business for approximately $51 million. This move will provide GE with AI-driven image analysis tools to enhance its ultrasound portfolio, improving workflows and ease of use. The sale of its clinical AI business was prompted by slower-than-expected sales growth, making it insufficient to fund further business development. GE already has one Intelligent Ultrasound software integrated into its portfolio and plans to incorporate more AI innovations through this acquisition. The transaction is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter, and GE will fund it with its existing cash resources.
